Best intake for SEL

Any input on what the best intake would be if I loved the sound of the intake + performance gains? Not expecting a whole lot I was going for the noise really but curious about both. Drop ins, full kits, etc.

You will get a big range of opinions here. Somewhere there is a dyno comparison floating around. I wanted the steeda but it also comes at a steep price. I ended up with the KN kit. I love the sound and it did make an improvement. You will also see a lot of people do a "snorkel delete" with an open end filter, or run with the box open.

Hey boombots,

How's your K&N coupled with the SCT tune? Notice a significant enough step up in power to warrant the ~$700 that would need to be shelled out for the combo?

I love the sound of the intake first off... With that said a lot of people said I could have seen similar results with the snorkel delete and open filter, so I kind of wish I saved that money...

Tom did a good job on my tune. I feel a great improvement in drivability. Is it a racecar, no. Its a 4 cyl car. Is there an improvement, oh yea. I think it is worth it. It has more grunt low down but this thing lows high RPMs and it pulls pretty good to redline, more so than stock.

Do a k&n filter with end cap. Keep your stock air box but delete the snorkel.

Second. Cheap and easy...though the scar is still healing where the snorkel fought back...

Those of you doing the snorkel delete and drop-in, are you keeping the airbox lid on or are you ditching that? Would the Roush kit be a good compromise between it all? It would also still utilize both of the "cold air ducts" to the original box....as well as the original box. Anyone try the Roush kit? I can get it through my work for half the price of what the K&N would cost me, and $200 cheaper than the Steeda CAI.

I keep my lid on. If I want the sound I take the cap off the end of the filter. There are two different k&n that will fit. One has a black cap, the other has a black with removable cap.

Lid off my IATs go through the roof, moving or not. I avg 100-104. Cap on. I would never go lid off just cause with the stock setup minus snorkel delete, you still get air through the front which is technically coolest. Lid off you compromise the path air travels and it'll just take engine bay air.

I did the snorkle delete with a standard K&N closed-end filter and leave my lid on. I kind of wish I went with the K&N with the removable end cap..then if I wanted noise I had an on/off switch so to say. I too have looked at the Roush kit but man $200 for a filter that is worth about $50 and a lid that is open and seals against the hood seems steep. Air Raid's kit is essentially the same..closed-ended filter with a new top for the box. I am a sucker for K&N's marketing and would probably get their kit if I wanted a full open filter deal. Dyno work on the other Focus site shows it had the best gain out of those tested...it is supposed to v. loud. Autoanything has the K&N 15% off putting it under $200 I believe. Finally, I plan to pick up the ST velocity stack to put where the former snorkle was..figure for $5 why not...probably smooths out the flow into the box a bit.
