Installed the Borla exhaust yesterday. It took a lot of modding (think cutting and welding) to get it to fit because it was built for a Focus wagon but it was well worth it.

It sounds amazing; its unmistakable that the car is a four banger but it's got a very nice, throaty sound IMO. It's the best under load from about 2500 to 3500 rpms.

The biggest problem I have is that the tip still sticks out a ways and the only way to shorten it is cutting it off and putting a new one back or welding this one back on.

And some pics of the day.

When it was still clean.

When it was no longer clean 80 miles later on salted roads (yes, it snowed last night)

BTW I hate sun. It shows how poorly my car's paint really looks. lol

And back to it's natural habitat. lol

BTW I can still find snow on the ground.

Thanks. I really liked that new ST but I don't know how well they will age. I wouldn't give up my car for the world though. lol

I know, it's not often that it's that clean.

My camera has a video feature but I've never used it. I can play around with it someday and see what comes out.

Got some paint question for ya.

I want to fix some rust on my hatch, there's about a 3" blob on the bottom edge that is started to get pretty bad, and little spots are popping up along the rest of the edge now. I bought a can of sonic blue paint (rattlecan, from automotivetouchup.com). My plan is to sand off the rust, put filler back in, maybe add some rust preventive, paint, sand, polish.

So here's the questions:
  • Should I repaint the entire hatch when I do this? I'm thinking I should to get a decent color match.
  • How far will one can get me? Enough to do the whole thing? Buy a couple more maybe?
  • (Moving in the other direction) What kind of air compressor do you use for the paint gun? I've got a little 1HP 125 psi Craftsman, but I think I could borrow a beefier one if needed...

I might also want to do the same to my bumpers one day, depending on on the hatch turns out...

My first piece of advice would be to ditch that hatch and get a new, unrusted one. One winter after painting mine, I'm already starting to get some rust coming through one of the patches under the window. From my experience, rust spots at the bottom edges of the doors and hatch tend to come from the inside out, so no matter what you do, the door will continue to rusting behind the patch.

Now to answer your questions.

1) Considering your only talking about a very small portion (the lower 1" or two of the bottom I'm guessing) painting the whole thing may not be necessary. That said, painting the whole hatch will avoid any chances of mismatched paint from fading. I'm finding that my car's paint has gotten much bluer than the paint that I'm buying which is a darker blue/purple so I have to paint entire areas so it's less noticeable although you can still tell in the right light.

2) The way I did my hatch was to prime only the areas that I repaired and lightly sand the rest. That way, most of the hatch was still blue before painting and required much less paint than if the whole hatch was a primer grey. In other words, the blue areas only needed a little spray paint to tint it to a consistent shade while the primed areas required much more paint so that the gray didn't show through the paint. If you use this method, you should only need one can but it's much better to use too much paint than not enough (trust me, I know ). Have two on hand in case you need more or need to patch something later.

3) I'm not sure about the exact stats of the compresses I use but it sounds about the same. My gun is only supposed to have 75 to 50 psi so the max psi doesn't really matter. Tank size is more valuable but a regulator is your most valuable friend. I just got one but haven't used it on the gun yet.

I hope that helps at least a little. If something doesn't make sense, just ask.
