Wow, mine is getting worse, and if they refuse, or are unable to fix it, how bad will it get?
Looks we are guinea pigs here. I know for sure that I would not buy a used vehicle making this noise UNLESS I got a significant discount that I could apply toward the repair. If no repair is possible, then I say that automatically qualifies as a significant devaluation of the vehicle. Correct? Is there any way to refute that? Then we all qualify for refunds, or replacement vehicles, according to state lemon laws. (not to mention safety! These parts are falling apart!) It sounds like ford is just begging to go down in flames over this one. They should just install a new aftermarket strut, and save the company. Some CEO is going to get paid the same either way, so what do the execs care about long term viability of the car company? Very little evidently. Where is "Thomas" the guy from ford who reads this stuff? "Thomas"? "Thomas"? |

I agree with you. Until I see that strut bearing part number with something other than a "-A" at the end, this problem will likely continue--that is, if this problem is due to the part itself and not the way it is being assembled on the car.

If you google "strut chuckle" you come upon some HUGE threads, like hundreds of pages om forums, about the same sound on the new mustangs. They call it "loose lumber" or "strut chuckle"..... I call it "the sound my 72 pinto made" (I actually liked that car, but that front end was LOOSE)
There is also a thread and TSB about the same strut problem with the Chrysler mini van. Nowhere in there didi see anyone claim that it was a European thing, and helps with cornering. |

Mine goes in tomorrow for TSB-12-6-17. I was on the verge of trading it in on an Escape. That all changed today after learning that 11,500 of them are being recalled as they are prone to bursting into flames without warning. Ford has advised all 1.6 Ecoboost owners to stop driving their brand new Escapes immediately. Nice!
No more first year Fords for me.

I had the tsb parts replaced today and there's no change in the noise. The service manager said there's nothing more that can be done until Ford comes up with something so it looks like we're on our own. If anyone comes up with a bearing or spring that resolves the noise please post part numbers.

Our SE Sport has developed this on both of the front struts. It actually came on in the last 100 miles or so. The usual rattle/clunk when going over speed bumps or otherwise changing the loading of the struts at low speed.
I can't tell you how much I'm not looking forward to starting the "We couldn't duplicate it"/"That's the normal noise for the Focus"/"Blah, blah, blah" process. My dealer is pretty good, but on warranty issues their hands are mostly tied. It's not as if the car has been abused. My wife is the primary driver and babies this car. It was purchased in October of 2011 and has barely 2100 miles on it. Come on Ford, overcome 68 pages of FAIL and fix this issue once and for all. |

I got the driver side engine mount replaced today and the car is quiet and smooth once more (I hope it stays that way).
However, I believe that there may be different sources of front suspension noise. Previously, I had the TSB replacing the strut bearings and springs done and some noise was eliminated but on the front passenger side a thumping noise remained at slow speed over street patches, this was eliminated today. My car is a SEL HB with 2,000 miles. I hope this is useful, I really like my car a lot!!! |
