I put a substantial amount of miles on my own cars and will be driving this one for a month or so before she gets her license. I'm guessing it's just going to be a little noisier than my Zetec. Still runs pretty good.

If anyone else has anything to add, I'm open to ideas.
I hate to inform you but the SPI is referred to as "ticking timebombs" by a good amount of people. Im not trying to sound like a dick but why would you buy an SPI when you know these motors have serious problems, let alone one that was abused? You were just asking for trouble. I wouldnt even waste my time if i were you with screwing around trying to figure out the knocking problem, its obviously something internal judging by what you posted and whatever it is, its going to be very expensive to replace (probably need a new motor) and i would highly recommend going a Zetec swap. Its not that hard.

But why are we bumping this?
yeah I pretty much havent been around since I sold my 02 Focus SPI. had a really busy summer and was involved with a ton of other cars in the meantime lol. The KL is indeed a beautiful exotic sounding motor. If only I could put one in a Focus...especially a SVT ZX5...*jizzes in pants*

Not as hard as a V8 because you wouldn't have to touch the rear end.

I know this thread started back in Sept of '11, but I'd just like to say that the little SPI is still running. Just as noisy as it was three years ago.
My daughter has put 35k miles on it(185k at last oil change). I change the oil every 3k miles and do regular maintenance whenever needed.
I thought the motor would have given out by now, but just keeps going.
