Turn Signal Issue

So I was driving on the highway en-route to my friends place when I notice my left turn signal is hyper blinking. I'm assuming one of my lights is out. I think no biggie, there is an Auto Zone right off the highway on the way to her place. Well I get there, leave the car running and flip on the left turn and go walk around the car. All the lights are blinking (albeit faster than normal,) I checked the right while I was at it -all working normal. So I scratch my head and continue to my friends' house.

Well just now on the way home, I make my first left hand turn and its hyper blinking again but this time the left indicator on my cluster is staying lit while making the faster clicking sound (even when the right is on blinking normal, the left stays lit. So when I get into my garage, with the car running, I check the lights again. The front headlight and side marker are both not working, the rear is blinking faster.

So which light would be causing this? Do I just need to replace both the side marker and headlight turn indicator? I probably wont have time to go to the store or fiddle around with the lights until after work tomorrow. Any thoughts would be welcomed.

If your front head light wasn't out, I'd suggest the flasher unit needed replacing. Otherwise, I think you're looking for a wiring short. Examine the turn signal socket receptacles for corrosion.

flasher unit is the first step I would take. The one in my mazda crapped out on me awhile back and I couldn't find a replacement. Found a how to for a Miata unit which was the same one I have and it required soldering but it fixed the problem. Being a focus they're probably easy to find, and cheap...... especially in junk yards where if it fits in your pocket its free.

Well I popped my hood this morning and made sure all connection to the headlight were tight, not really doing anything. Well when i get in my car the left signal light is not lit up any more. I go to make my first left turn and the blinker works fine, no hyper blinking.

I didnt get out of the car to see if it was working properly, had to get in to work. So could this just have been a loose connection that caused this and all is well or should I be looking into something else as you pointed out? I did recently clean my CAI, so I guess its possible i could have bumped into the headlight while i was doing it but this seems like too easy of a fix. Im going to go to my car at lunch and will check to see if the signal is working fine still.

Well I just went out to the car and the indicators work as normal. Not sure what kind of gremlin i had in the system but its gone for now and all is well. Thanks for the replies and I'm glad i didnt have to do any of what you guys mentioned above.

classic short to voltage, you have 2 wires touching somewhere in there.

I will have to seriously look into this one then when I have some time. Something on the wire harness for the head lamps then, right? If i see any wires touching, i probably can safely use eletrical tape to keep the wires from making contact?

the short could be anywhere, you're gonna need a test meter and somebody that knows how to use it and a few hours of pulling stuff apart to find it. wiring schematics help a ton too. electrical problems are a pain

StayFocusedSon is right, it sounds more as if you have a short some where in your wiring system. It's not difficult to chase down an electrical gremlin as long as you have some patience and time on your hands. Just need a good wiring schematic from either a Chilton or Hayne's manual(Ford manuals are best though) and just do some general testing on the wires that connect to the turn signals. There is more than likely a small cut in the wiring insulator and the wire is just grounding out at certain times.
