are the manuals more troublesome than autos, i worry about having to change the clutch or throw out bearing. i never worked on a fwd clutch before.

Generally speaking, manuals will cost less from the factory and be easier to work on and should outlast their automatic counter parts.

I personally feel that manuals are more fun, engaging and responsive than auto's. It will ultimately come down to what you prefer and the sort of driving you do. I will agree with wolfwyndd's post as well. A manual in an '03 should net better mpgs than an automatic.

Although when it comes to newer cars, there are auto's that can out perform manuals and make half my above argument moot but for 00-11 Focus, that is not that case.

Yes, most were automatics.
Some of us even prefer automatics over manuals.
For basic daily drivers or drag cars, I greatly prefer an auto.
For road race cars, manual trans.
My '03 ZX3 Focus is not a road race car, nor a pretend race car, it is a driver; and I am glad I searched out an automatic.

The majority of foci are automatics for every year of production. It's actually pretty rare to find a standard one, it's just that most of us on the site have them lol
