You can turn them off and you're actually supposed to when it's not raining. Many people were leaving them on which, when shifting into reverse, would cause a dry-swipe on the rear window. Off-intermittent-low-high are the same settings, but instead of a specific intermittent swipe pattern you have a swipe based on the amount of precipitation measured on the sensor in the windshield.

If it is not raining you don't get the rear swipe in reverse.

Mine has on times that I've left the system on, but I'm usually pretty good about remembering to shut it off.

I like having the rain sensing wipers. No problems on mine other than the occasional random wipe :)

I know the 13's don't have the rain sensing wipers unlike the 12's, which is good. That feature is usually poorly executed on anything but top end cars.

VW had them on all but the lowest S trim Passat as well. Like the Focus, it only lasted 1 year before they did away with it. Seems like when that feature does make it on to a lower end/common car, it never stays around long due to poor execution. It's one of those features that should just stay with the high dollar lux cars.
Actually, I love mine.

But I've never understood how the programmers didn't make it smart enough that Auto Wipers ON + Auto Lamps ON doesn't result in lights + wipers on when it starts raining...

...yet manually flipping the wipers on turns the lights on.

Huh, I leave mine on ALL the time and I don't think I've ever had that issue if it's not raining.

I remember reading in my owners manual (Job 1, 2011 build) that if the auto wipers were on for at least 30sec. and the auto lights were set, they would come on, but that was never actually a thing the Mk3 did...

But yeah, it's pretty lame.

I wish the rain lamps would work with the intermittent setting, I rarely if ever use the low or high setting almost always use intermittent wipers, and would love for the lights to come on by themselves when using my wipers in the rain...

I just discovered that if you plug in two USB flash drives with mp3 files, the car will show them as two different choices in the entertainment menu, and will separately remember the settings for each one, including shuffle on/off, and where you left off listening.

Now I have my audio books on one flash drive (shuffle off), and my music files on the other one (shuffle on). Allows me to leave a story, go listen to some music, then return to where I left off the story...and not have to switch shuffle on and off each time.
