install kit

The HU I have in my focus right now is a Sony CDX-L510X (sony... i know, i know) which has a flip down face. I have been unable to find an install kit that will alow the face to fold down. of all the stores i went to, i was only able to find 2 kits for a focus. the one i bought is made by Metra, and is listed as being for a 2000 focus, or '99-2000 cougar. the other kit was listed as being for a 2000-03 focus. we tried both kits with every flip down face HU in the store to see if it was just the way the sony folded down that blocked it, but alas, both kits seem to block all fold down face HU's... I bought a Metra kit and did a little cutting, and the face will now fold down properly, but it looks like ass. Is there anyone with a fold down face HU that has a found a kit that does not block the face from folding down? what make and where can i order one on the net...

If not, i've been kinda considering doin a "stealth" install.... i was thinking i'd put the stock cd player back in and leave the speaker wires disconnected (so i could still use the clock), then mount the sony HU somewhere else, where i can still reach it to switch discs, but its out of the way. any suggestions where i could mount the Sony HU? it does have a remote, so that give a little more flexability...

Go to Canadian Tire. They usually have kits that will work. My head unit folds down as well, and it opens fine.

The other thing to try is maybe reverse the way you have the kit. Put the deck on the bottom and the little storage area at the top, then no interference from the kit will prevent the face from opening.

i did try it upside down, with the little shelf thing at the top, and it still blocked it from opening. At Canadian tire, all i could find was one of those universal kits thats has pieces to work in about a hundred different cars. the focus was listed, but it didnt fit at all....

That's odd! I have a Pioneer that I put in myself and the face folds down with no problem. My kit that I got from Future Shop looks like yours with the tray and I have had no problems. I don't understand why your's would not work right.
I guess there's not much around in Sydney for selection as to were to get a kit. Maybe a road trip to Halifax is on order?!
