Trans and a/c issues

To start off I bought my 2012 Focus SE with sports package on January 3, 2013 with 17,200 miles on it as of this morning it has 35,600 miles on it. I get around.

I started noticing "the shudder" and didn't think much of it, but I noticed that sometimes it seemed like the car wasn't down shifting all the way when I came to a stop, the result is that it felt like it was falling on it's face when I'd accelerate, like it was taking off in 2nd gear, then it started doing similar feelings while driving in traffic, so I took it in, the local dealer looked at it and gave me the "hey it's normal and this paper says why" sheet, however during the oil change I got yesterday they tell me my trans is leaking and it's a very common problem with the clutches and shaft seal. Oh how common?? they tell me they've done lots and the parts are actually on back order because of how common the problem is, so it'll take a few weeks for them to come in. fml

For the A/C, i live in Florida, the A/C gets used daily, what started happening around 20k miles is when I'm sitting at an idle the A/C stops blowing cold and starts blasting me with warm air, like the compressor is shutting off, rev it up a few times and it starts blowing cold again, the thing is, it doesn't do it all the time, the dealer looks at it and tells me the freon level is within spec so sorry about your luck, if you leave it with us for a few days we can check it out better. My problem is that I have a job, obviously from the mileage, you can tell I drive my car for work. both dealers within 30 min of me claim that their A/C tech does not work on Saturday, so I'd have to leave it with them during the week, which I can't do and even after their latest offer of in a few weeks they can have the tech work on Saturday to work on it. great right? no because they made this offer at 35,258 miles and by Monday i'll be over 36k and out of warranty which they tell me means I'll get to pay for it. fml again.

I'm starting to think I should have gotten another Honda instead of this Focus.

For some background, I'm a copier tech and my service area is basically Sarasota to Naples, and I average 50-60k miles per year, I tend to use hatchbacks and while I like Honda's I like Ford's too, however the level of care and devotion to their product after you buy it is amazing, they both have the same 3/60 warranty.

Example
I bought my wife a 2005 Ford 500 new, at 17k miles the a/c compressor went out, Ford would not repair the car because the warranty was up in time by a month.

My 97 CRV (what I drove before this focus) had a problem with the ignition wiring harness in November 2012 @ 347k miles. i took it to the dealer, Honda decided that harness should never fail and replaced it for free.

My wife's 2006 Odyssey Touring developed a hesitation during shifting at approx 85k miles, Honda said that torque converter shouldn't have failed and replace it for free.

Please don't get me wrong, I love my Focus, and will probably end up getting a C-max or transit connect (2014 looks pimp) in a few years to replace it, I just wanted to point out the differences in dealing with issues from a drivers stand point.

What I Drive: 2013 Focus Titanium DCT Dilemma

There are known PowerShift (DCT) issues, I have a 2013 with a little over 2K on the odometer and experience low speed grinding, shuddering and occasional poor or jumpy shifting. Ford told me it was "Normal" and that no existing TSB's are applicable to my car.

I would suggest you take your car in to have it checked, there is one known issues of oil leaking into clutch pack and causing issues, most notably with 2012's.

I don't know what to say about your A/C, I know what you mean about it since i live on the other side of you in SE Florida. I use mine almost everyday, maybe on rare occasion during winter I won't.

I was going to get a C-Max, they are nice and more roomy but the fuel economy benefit for me was mixed since I do not do a lot of highway driving. The C-Max Energi would have been more suited but it was $$$. On a few highway trips I have done, like the Turnpike, I was able to get 44 MPG for a 40 mile one way drive. Not bad, and claiming to what some people say better than a C-Max.

Hi Dalamar,

I want to get your regional customer service manager involved so they can help. Send me a PM with your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name; I'll do the rest! :)

Any update on this, OP? Did they replace your clutches? Does your car vibrate afterwards, like mine?

Hi Whodatxevg,

Have you brought your Focus in to the dealership so they can perform an inspection? I want to get your regional customer service manager (CSM) so they can help; shoot me a PM with your VIN, dealership, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name. I'll get to work!
