Help - squeak/rattle coming from hatch

I have a 2013 SE hatch and have been having an annoying rattle/squeak sound coming from the hatch area. It noticeably occurs when driving 50+ mph and doesn't really seam to get louder when driving over bumps, etc. I decided to take everything out of the hatch area (everything except the top privacy cover - removed spare, jack, floor, etc.) and that just made it louder. I will be taking it in soon to get the 4-panel IPC update and will ask them about this, but I thought I would ask here since I probably won't be able to get an appointment for a week or two. I uploaded the sound file to youtube (below). It's a little hard to hear with the road noise, but I think it can be made out.

Also, is it normal for the floor vent to blow out quite a bit of air when only the dash vents are selected? My floor vents blow regardless of what position is selected?

Thanks for any suggestions/help.

Anyone? Surely someone has driven their car with the dash vents on and sandals.

I brought that phenomenon to the attention of my dealer, and they said it was normal. To be specific, on mine some air comes out of the outside foot well (towards the door) even with only the dash vent selected. It's definitely nowhere near as powerful coming out of the foot well as it would be had the foot well been selected, but I can definitely feel it. Must be some bleedover or something like that.

Hi mwalt2,

I'll get your regional customer service manager on top of this so they can assist. Send me your information in a PM and I'll make it happen. Be sure to include your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name in your message.

Hi mwalt,
I believe I had the same exact problem you are describing with the squeak coming from the hatch area. It was driving me insane so I finally took it in to the Ford dealer and it ended up being that something in the rear bumper was loose. I'd say take it in to your dealer and mention about the bumper and hopefully that will save them some time. I had to wait a whole day so that 2 techs were available, one to drive and the other to listen to the noise. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the reply. I bet you're right about the bumper. Some lady rear ended me a week after buying the car. We were stopped at a red light and then she took off when she thought the light turned green (it wasn't) and also decided to look down at something. It barely did any damage (was actually hard to even see any damage), but I had a Ford body shop replace the rear valence and repaint the bumper. I'm taking it in next week and will have them start with the bumper. It has been getting worse, so maybe it is getting looser.

I think I have the exact same rattle that you're describing and it has been driving me INSANE. The rattles from this car are the only disappointment so far, but there are several of them. The instrument cluster vibrates at ~2000 rpm but stops for a few days if i give it a good push. Certain frequencies cause the speaker in the back left and passenger front doors to rattle (even at low volume), but the worst of all is that squeaky rattle coming from the hatch and like you I tried disassembling the whole things trying to narrow it down but it looks like I'm going to have to task the dealer with it now. Let us know if they fix yours.

Shoot a PM with your info my way, Jonesy16; I want to get this into the hands of your regional customer service manager. In your message, be sure to include your name, phone number, mileage, VIN, and preferred servicing dealership. I'll do the rest.

I picked my car up today and they fixed the rattle. It was a 'loose rear bumper cover to body' according to the tech's notes. Also had the IPC tsb applied for the quad trip display...no more scrolling through 3 screen to reset the trips lol.

I too have the exact same rattle/squeaking noise! (although i could not play your video, it was marked as private)
I was convinced it was coming from the area around the passenger side rear seat belt area, Sunrise Ford in Fontana changed the seat belt (so they claim) and yep, you got it ... same exact noise! About a week ago i was using a duster on the car in the garage, I tapped the rear bumper accidentally with the duster and I heard the exact same noise! I am now convinced it is something loose or rubbing in the rear bumper. I am bringing it back next week for my 14K service and i cannot wait to have it fixed. yes the noise is MADDENING! thanks for posting I will let you know if they do get it fixed. and yes other than that I absolutely love the car
