Ford MFT navigation SD card

I noticed that the navigation is just an additional SD card with the navigation software on it, Seems to be no additional hardware involved? Wonder if it will ever sell aftermarket for a lot less than $800 option. I'm sure it is unique to each vehicle but someone always figures a way around that.

This topic has been covered ad nauseum in other threads, the simple answer:

Nav software is in all of the MyFordTouch Head Units, but it is only "activated" at the factory for those specced to have the nav system.

SD card only contains the map/location/etc. information

Various publications have listed it as a potential post-factory upgrade, but Ford has never officially said this. Various people have tried to put the SD card in non-"Activated" MFT HU's and as expected, they were not magically granted access to the glory of integrated Nav.

Maybe Ford will enable service upgrades that will "activate" your HU, but at the moment it appears this service is not in the pipeline.

Hmm. So does that mean Ford goes through the trouble and expense of adding the hardware (GPS receiver and antenna) to all cars even if it isn't going to be used? Has anyone done a teardown to show that the necessary hardware is present? Doesn't make much sense if they don't want to offer an upgrade option.

While it would be nice to have the NAV built into the car and have voice commands for it. The issues that people have been having who have NAV with MFT sounds like a nightmare. until its fully fixed i won't bother looking into it.

Also to pay 120 bucks a year for updates sounds stupid

It is definitely there, if you use the 911 assist or some of the sync services it will pull the gps information from the car.

In most cases, it's actually cheaper in the grand scheme of things to have 1 part number and just disable features in software. Economies of scale is a powerful thing when it comes to manufacturing.

It is all there to use TDI.

The only thing that differentiates whether your car can have Nav installed is:
MFT
(speculation) If you have MFT w/o Nav it may be possible in the future to get the nav option from a dealership by buying the SD card and having your vehicle activated.
If you do not have MFT, there is no way for you to get Nav ever.

"Navigation Capabilities on All MyFord Touch Cars - But It Ships Disabled
Ford explains: When you take delivery of a Ford with MyFord Touch or Lincoln with MyLincoln Touch, you get a vehicle with an 8-inch touchscreen and you also get the navigation application embedded in the car. But it's no good without the navigation SD card, for which you pay $795, and then Ford activates the car and enables navigation. That apparently means you can choose to have factory onboard navigation the day you take delivery. Or, later on, you can choose between factory navigation or a third-party portable GPS system that will be clunky, take up space on the windshield, and cost half what Ford charges."
