I think your issues are caused by something else?

The drifting problem occurs at HWY speeds. To me it feels like the car is
being pushed left or right like there's a strong crosswind.

To answer your question, I drove it for a little over 30 minutes before the test drive with the mechanic.

For new readers, look at past posts and you will see the typical common symptoms:
Happens:
-at cruising speed 60mph+ on a straight highway
-happens after 30 minutes more and is intermittent
-very difficult to keep straight, constantly correcting steering wheel
-Not car alignment problem (Had the vehicle car aligned)
There are better descriptions in the past posts.

On another note, I've only seen one post about a rack replacement that supposedly corrected the problem. It would be reassuring to see additional posts that found a resolution.

Have: Titanium focus Hatchback (Fully Loaded)

Other problems that maybe helpful for readers:
-NAvigation system froze (Work around was to restart car to fix)
-Window stress fracture (Under warranty)
-Tranny shudder (TSB - known issue, will go away after normal use)
-And of course the steering issue - Work in progress

Test Engineer: See this thread http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263243 and go to the end. Send a PM to Ford Customer Service (Natasha) to tell her that the dealer does not seem to be able to understand that there is a steering rack sensor / rack position issue there. She will likely help you, taking your particulars.

Incidentally, if you go to the beginning of the last thread cited, you can see others who have had the racks replaced (or are in the process thereof) who have gained a measure of satisfaction from their treatment at Ford.

I had the steering rack assembly replaced about 2 weeks ago and everything is fine now so far. I haven't done a really long road trip yet, but I don't suspect anymore issues, as it has been peferct on every 1/2 hour freeway trip to date.

Mine should be getting replaced today or tomorrow. I am taking it for an extended drive upon receiving the car and will report back with results. I'm reallly hoping this will alleviate the issue otherwise I'm going down the lemon law path. Luckily I live in MA which is one of hte best lemon law states if need be.

Steering binding/erratic steering

Hey Herbz and sehatch. I finally got the correct rack assy installed. The 1st one the dealer received was the original part number and they opted to wait for the updated part. I now works great. No more sticking/binding etc.
To those of you beating on this dead horse, just go to your Ford dealer or call Ford Corp. They know they have an issue with a few cars.It will be fixed.

Sweet! Good to hear. That's 2 people now that the problem has been rectified for. My car is done, I am picking it up tonight. I'll wait for traffic to die down and go for a nice little cruise. Will report back. Hopefully there will be 3 of us with the problem fixed and we can go back to enjoying our cars.

I finally got around to driving my new SEL on the freeway for over an hour and there was no problem with the steering at all. So I hope this is something that got corrected after the two week plant shutdown.

Fanddp, great news. It’s a shame the problem existed spoiling the new car feeling, but all is well now. Still very happy with the 2012 Focus….sehatchhttp://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile_cool.gif
