I'm going to wait until this is more thoroughly documented, and hopefully Ford corporate will release documentation to dealers outlining effected units and basically streamlining the whole replacement process. I have ZERO desire to make more then a single trip to the dealer to get this fixed...and I REALLY don't care to go for a drive with a tech for 20+ minutes just to show them.

So hopefully releases a bulletin or report or whatever. If we're real lucky, the effected parts will be serialized and as such easy to verify as needing replacements.

@herbz - How did you go about contacting Ford and getting a case number? Did you call Ford corporate or were you put in touch with them by the dealership? I'd like to get moving on resolving this, but I REALLY don't want to go back to the originating dealer (horrible customer service, I'm sure they are mailing my survey to Alaska instead of Jersey) unless I have to.

Call this number:

Customer Relationship Center
United States
800-392-3673
800-232-5952 (TDD for the Hearing Impaired)
Available 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Local Time
Monday-Friday

Then follow the options and you will be put in touch with a Customer Care specialist. You can tell him/her all your concerns about the vehicle and dealership. They will open a case number for you. I am not sure how this will immediately help, but I decided to do it, just in case I ran into problems with my dealer being "stingy" about not being able to replicate the issue.

I've felt an issues similar to what you all describe, except that I would call it a shimmy. To my experience, it only happens at speed and on the freeway with pronounced rain grooves.

My guess was that it was directly related to the PS3's Their tread pattern would be susceptible to getting into parallel groves in the direction of travel. But, maybe that's just my butt talking.

Note that a discussion about this issue is also happening, in parallel, in "Ford Focus Technical Chat", here: http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263243

I have the same zigzag steering issue with foci titanium. I bought the 17inch $295 additional because of different rims. rims have conti tires. I wonder if these maybe contributing to the problem. I had a vw passat and fitted them with cheap tires and had similar zigzag problems. I bet the thin sidewalls on these tires are causing some of the steering issues.

As I'm read more posts, it seems there is a defect in the steering system. I too like many others would like a definitive answer to whether Ford acknowledges that there is an issue and how it will be resolved. It will be interesting if Ford will have a recall/TSB.

Just bought this car and I'm disappointed that this wasn't addressed earlier since this is a safety issue. I have to have 2 hands on the steering wheel as the vehicle veers easily (constantly compensating at about 60mph and above).

Focus has 300 miles, is a hatchback.

Everyone with this problem should call Ford Corporate and let them know of this issue. The number is a few posts up. The more people that call in, the better chance we all have to get this problem fixed.

As a quick status update, I was able to duplicate the problem with a tech yesterday. I left my car with them, and I'll see what they come back with.

I also urge anyone who has actually had the steering rack replaced to post whether or not that fixed the problem.

This problem was distinct and very significant for me in the 1st 1500 miles. Since then, this problem has slowly faded from intermittent to nearly non-existent at 3500 miles. This makes me theorize that this is because of (or contributed to) by the Conti tires which are now broken in. I say this because I think everybody posting this issue has those tires. I haven't heard anybody complain with the Handling package/Michelin tires. Maybe the tires are a catalyst for a problem in the 'EPAS-Pull Drift compensation' electronics.

That said, we have couple folks in the process of getting replacement steering assemblies so I will be curious to hear their outcome. There are likely multiple contributing factors.

I reviewed the procedure to replace the rack in my Audi A3 shop manual that I suspect is similar and the work is extensive. Do you know what parts were order for your Focus and have they arrived.
My steering rack has been replaced and front end realigned. Replacement rack ships as a complete assembly. Only took a couple of hours to drop the sub frame to gain access to the rack. They completed the work same day. The alignment machine does not have 2012 Focus alignment figures, but the setup is the same as the 2011 Iím told. The tech did a great job and Iím happy with his work. Also found the service writer and the service manager to be very supportive.

Test drove the new rack today and Iím pleased to tell you all is well. Car tracks and steers great. Itís now possible to steer with one hand and stability is good. Happy camper againÖ

Thanks for the post! Glad to hear that everything worked out for you. I'm now very eager to get mine replaced. First I have to wait for my dealer to "figure it out" with help from Ford. Then I have to wait for a steering rack to actually come in, since apparently they are on backorder? How long did yours take to come in?
