COMPLETELY FREE 2012 Black Grille mod

And I do mean completely free! Here's how.

Call or go to your local vinyl sign or graphics shop and ask kindly for a small scrap of vinyl. For this job you will need a piece at least 9 1/4" by 1 1/2". More than likely they will chuckle at such a small measurement and hand you a piece of vinyl for free. I was handed a piece roughly 12" by 14" for FREE.

I then grabbed my favorite cutting board, and cut two pieces 12" by 3/4" (noting you only need 9 1/4" x 3/4"). I left the ends long enough to have "handling tabs", then trimmed off later.

I did try to remove the chrome inserts, but was unsuccessful, and feared breaking a retaining tab or two. However they do appear to just snap in. Start at one end and smooth the vinyl inch by inch, as the inserts do have a slight curve on the horizontal plain.

Trim both end with a sharp razor knife and smooth out with a heat gun if desired.

And there you have yourself a FREE blacked out grille. If you don't like it down the road, the vinyl can always be removed, or replaced when weathered. Flows quite nicely if you ask me.

That looks awesome...I will be looking into doing this as well. Just need to find a Vinyl Place out here.

Looks nice! I might give this a try on my SE.

Would the vinyl work on the chrome fog light bezels, too?

Has anyone figured out how to pull the headlights apart to mod the aluminum bezels?

Sure. But that's a lot of curves to conform to.

Not sure what this means. As far the active grille shutters.....my manual SE with sport package didn't get them! But.....I figure one less thing to make my engine overheat when they fail to open.

I've had my headlights out five times already to change bulbs and adjust the fog lights up. They are all one housing with a harness connected. The old oven trick would be your only option I believe.

And finally....... If you like this post....... Hook me up with some rep points! (click that little blue 1 under my name)

I didn't know how pliable the vinyl is. Maybe it's pliable enough with some heat.

Are you saying the headlight housing is sealed/glued together? What's the old oven trick?

I have the SE Sport in Canada with the Kysor vents. They are always closed when the car is parked, so I haven't seen them open. The water temps have been ok, so I assume they work!

-Vinyl is very conforming with heat indeed. But you can easily stretch a hole right in it if you're not careful, and have to start all over.

-Yes the headlights are glued together. The oven trick is to "bake" them, or warm them up in the oven to separate the glued on front lens. I have never tried this personally.

-And I too have have seen the SE sport with AGS here too. However they were always ATX. I have not seen a MTX other than mine to compare, so I don't know what the factor is of who gets them and who doesn't.
