I did this mod tonight and here are my thoughts.

1. Use a flat blade screw driver to take the flap off the side panel.

2. Getting that round pin out wasn't easy, had to work it loose and carefully pull at the panel the way described, make sure you remove the front floor mat.

3. I ordered the monoprice adaptor as mentioned earlier but it would not fit so I had to shave it down, then I was able to get into the connector. I'm thinking about using a Standard USB mini 5pin male to Male USB cable and getting one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/USB-Female-Ada...1230113&sr=8-2

This way it will fit better & we can try to connect a USB Memory stick into the adapter as well as an I-pod, will let you know if it works better!

I know this is an old post, but if I were to do this and simply plug a 32gb flash drive into the USB2 port, would it play? I would like to just open it up, put in the loaded flash drive, and forget about it.

Yes you can connect a usb memory stick, you need to use the correct cables. I used a Standard USB mini 5pin male to Male USB cable and a female to female usb adapter and then connected another usb male to female connecter, then the usb stick plugs into the usb female end.
Works good for me.

Cool, how does Sync decide which USB port to use?

I'm going to try this option. One question though, why do you need a USB male to USB female connector after the female to female?

My usb stick fit better that way, it needs to make a good connection.
Depending on your memory stick, make sure the usb end fits in good.

I just did this upgrade this weekend. Now I have the option of plugging in my ipod classic (120Gig) to sync via an ipod cable located in my glove compartment or inside the arm rest. If my phone is low on power it is nice to know that I can still use my ipod (USB2) while my phone gets charged via the USB1 port. Thanks for the info and instructions.

I was wondering if anyone ever tried going back and forth between USB and USB2 once they've done this with two different media devices? I've noticed that it will only recognize one or the other. I've read on other ford forums that this is because of a powering issue but I find that hard to believe because it still charges my iphone quickly even if its not the active media device.

I can switch between 2 usb memory sticks, one on USB and one on USB2.
If it doesn't work make sure you have a good connection that seems to be the key to getting it to work reliably.
