From R1derBike: "I had zero issues on the three trim levels I drove, but they were all late 2011 builds, with the latest update. Mine was built in June, so it needed the update, and it was done quickly, at my request. "

Is there a way for the typical driver/owner to check if the vehicle has been updated (I'd rather not rely on a dealer or mechanic with a special software tool (kind of that wizard of oz don't-look-behind-the-curtain fear).

Was yours built before or after the magic date of Aug 12th?

Trying to buy American (or at least American-headquartered), and Ford is my darling since they didn't take a buyout, but I can't take on these mechanical/sofware issues into my daily life.

Hey Tncrom,

Be assured we desire our current and future Ford Family members to have nothing but pleasure issues when driving our vehicles. That's why Ford has striven to address the transmission concerns with the updates. My Ford Touch w/Sync, clearly a game-changing technology, will also receive a major upgrade which includes simpler graphics, faster touch-screen response and easier to use controls on '11 & '12 Focuses.

These upgrades are conducted by the dealership prior to a sale, so if you're interested in a specific Focus, ask them whether or not they have been completed on the Focus.

Hi Gort69,

Glad your demonstration drive went well. Here's a Comparison to help along your shopping decision. Looking forward to the day you're cruising around in a Focus.

Hey again Tncrom,

Hmmm...sounds like you've made your decision. If you haven't had a chance to drive a Focus, give your local Ford dealership a visit. They'll be more than happy to put to rest any concerns you may have.

Have a GREAT New Year all!

My first car was a Ford, and I've owned many in my 35 plus years of driving, but I think they lost their way with the new Focus. I've seen the Mazda 3, so these are probably parting shots:
1. Left too many parts out of the transmission, trying to do it all in software.
2. Terrible OEM radios, and dashboard designed to prevent aftermarket DIN.
3. Awful steering wheel and control ergonomics, should be recalled.
Thanks for sharing, I'll be leaving the group as soon as I figure out how.

Thats the problem with Ford dealerships, its buyer beware! you had better go thru the car make sure all the options are there and everthig works, dont take the Salesmans word for it the key to the reply is: " ask them whether or not they have been completed on the Focus". Bought mine from Webb In Indiana and they would not take it back.

Exclamation Same issue; don't take "not a problem" for an answer!

I saw this post and just had to add my story to this thread.

I have a 2012 Focus SE. I have had it now for 8 months. I have been having similar issues for the last 8 months, although not as severe as yours. For the last week or so, I have been seeing really big stutters and the transmission was very, VERY slow to react to changing conditions. Finally, today I went to get a quick lunch, and the gears started to grind and the car was shaking, so I immediately pulled over. I called my local dealership, talked to the manager, and was told to drive it in. When I turned on my car, the second it went into 2nd gear, it start to shake violently. I had to get it put on a flat-bed tow truck to get it in.

I'm a broke college student, and this was my first car purchase (although I have driven many cars). I knew something was wrong, and I sent letters to dealerships and FMC themselves, and they all told me there was nothing wrong with my car. Now it's in the shop for "at least a week," and I'm done with Ford.

If, like others are saying, this is normal, then Ford has some serious problems they need to work out. I wish you the best of luck.

In addition to my last comment, if you, Natasha, say that "and those with concerns are addressed" with sincerity, then I have been talking to the wrong people at Ford Motor Company. Everyone has just told me "You car is not a lemon. Goodbye." and I'm sick of it. If you want to prove me wrong and think you can change my mind about Fords, I would greatly appreciate a message or call. It took my car's transmission to finally fail, after only 8 months, to get the attention of someone at Ford, and all I can do now is recommend staying away from these cars.

It's sad, really, that these Focus's are the nicest looking cars with technology seen in no other cars [and at an amazing price(too good to be true?!)], but these components just don't work. And, again, if the "violent stuttering" is normal, then the people at Ford need to go back to the drawing board, because no other car I have ever driven acts that way.
