A lot of the rest of it is because of the type of transmission.
Fact is, other than the grinding issue I'm having, I really like the car. It is packed with features and is plenty comfortable on long trips. Oh, and the gas mileage is awesome. If I could get rid of this grinding, I would be so happy. If you don't hear it, after testing it thoroughly, you're probably good to go. My problem has been since day one.
Hi Tiburon,

I noticed your post in another thread concerning the transmission issue. I can update the case to the regional Customer Service Manager. I just need a PM with the current mileage and provide a brief history since the last dealership visit.

Thanks!

Hi Gort69,

Though it may seem everyone is having the same concern, and while symptoms may be the same, the causes may be different. Much of the issues were software related and we have made updates accordingly. We also strive to educate our current and potential Ford Family members about the new transmission technology behavior. I hope you reconsider on the Focus. Why don't you take Tiburon's suggestion and visit the local Ford dealership for a test drive. After-wards, let us know the results of the visit!

Noemi - I've test driven the new Focus a few times - as a matter of fact I'm headed to the dealership again today. I have yet to notice the problems discussed, but I'll be paying closer today plus asking them about the new transmission technology behavior. I am currently a Focus owner and hope to continue in that vein - but I must admit being gun-shy of the first year of a new model vehicle; especially when I see reviews in the auto press mentioning the same transmission concerns. Granted, these tests were before the aforementioned software updates, but ...

I have a strange issue after my software update. When I drive up a steep incline (a high hump, for about 20 yards), then let-off at the top to coast down the other side, the car surges and bucks, as the transmission can't make-up its mind whether to disengage, shift through gears, or otherwise. It revs as if in neutral, then bucks several times, as it engages and disengages several gears.

This happens every day, as the "hump" is just off the main road, on the street I live on.

I have to slow to a near crawl, to make the turn, and go up the hump. This is driving me nuts, and I'm to the point that putting it in sport mode (select shift) and manually selecting the gears is the only resolution.

Any ideas? The update cured all other issues I had, but introduced this new one?

I may drive around the issue in sport mode, but that's just a band-aid!

Hmm - during today's test drive I found that I really enjoy the sport mode - especially since I'm coming from a Focus Focus w/ manual transmission. In your case has it "worn thin" - are you looking to put in in D and not be forced to override it with Sport/shifting? If so, I can understand your frustration...

Just curious, when did you buy your Focus and how long ago did you get the update? I don't live where there are ANY hills, but the last time I went somewhere where there are hills, I did have a lot of similar problems, although that was before the update. I wish I could test it today, but the biggest hill we have in Brunswick, GA is the off-ramp to the interstate, LOL. The shifting on my vehicle has felt relatively smooth since the software update. Unfortunately, the problem I'm having, which is a grinding sound in gear changes, hasn't been addressed. Good luck!

Bought my new Focus the 17th of Dec. It had a June '11 build date. Had the tranny update done before Christmas, and it fixed quick shifting, lurching, and surging issues (even revving and lurching when making a turn, after a stop). I had to feed a lot of throttle before, to get a downshift, now it's good. It revs through the gears with higher shift points now, which is a big improvement.

I live in northwest AR, and we have curves, hills, twisties and more. A sportbike mecca.

I don't know if the update was a rob Peter, pay Paul thing, but I didn't have the steep incline/decline issue before the update.

Gort69, I like select-shift on my Focus, but hate to use it as a band-aid to overcome an issue.

I haven't talked with anyone at the dealership. I'm going to take a wait-n-see stance at this point. To their credit, this tranny update has taken care of all the issues I had before.

Tuning a tranny like this is infinitely complicated. Variables are daunting, I know.

Trying to get the tranny to behave like the clutch has disengaged, or a higher gear has been selected to coast/drive down the decline I have to negotiate is a tall order. I'm sure they will get the hunting/revving tamed. The incline is much steeper than the decline.

Personally, when I look at the car as the sum of its parts, it is the best compact car I have driven, in its price class. Ask my wife. She bought a Cruze, after we both drove it, and she now acknowledges the Focus is far superior, and quiet inside.

I'll wait for another tranny update. There is really nothing Ford or I may do at this point. It is just a quirk, possibly due to the extreme terrain around here. I'll live with it, because I really like this car!

Is the new transmission control code updates supposed to have some effect on the 2012 Focus' mpg city/hwy figures? Thanks!
