Headrests have absolutely 0% to do with comfort and 100% to do with safety. They are in place so you don't snap your neck in the event you're rear ended. If you find it's in your way that means your seat is not adjusted properly.

I hate to break it to everyone that has a problem with the angle of the head-restraints (I don't) but here in Canada, they will/are the law and the U.S. won't be far behind. Just google "head restraints" and see what comes up.

My headrest annoys me also.
My prior car, SVT Contour had a great headrest. perfect position, and could be 'rolled' slightly to alter the point of contact. So I was able to rest my head at times and found it to be great.
The Focus is too close. and adjusting the seat to be tilted back a bit more than i like did allow me to be OK. But I really want to move the surface back at least a half inch. I think the interior of a compressing foam, so I may pull it and 'compress' it with a hammer a bit to see if i can get the depth i want
Or i may attept to dismantle one and see if I can resurface the front face with a thinner foam?
As for the law, it is like a "Do not remove under penalty of law" mattress tag IMO.
Who is gonna know? The dealer/manufacturer has to comply, But I don't.

As an aside, watching 2012 Focus crash tests, amazing how the front of the car crushes, and the passenger compartment is perfect. Only the side impact is not so great looking.

I had the same issue on my Mazda Tribute (built by Ford) and on my wife's Edge. We turned the headrests around.

I put my in the vice with some wood, it takes some proper convincing, but once they are bent back, makes all the difference in the world. Guys with other ford trucks have been doing it for years, but the Focus ones are very strong, but its SO worth it.

I had the thought of doing this also. Glad to hear it works. Any problem with the chrome on the posts cracking that you noticed?

Love the 2012 Focus SE, but hate, HATE the head restraints! Will another year be interchangeable, say like the 08?

Do you have a Job 1 2012? If so, you may want to search salvage yards for a Job 2 2012 or later (after 04/12 build date). The adjustable head restraints that are in these are much less intrusive than the originals, IMO.
