Really disappointing 1/4 mile time
I went to the track last Saturday. It was 70 Fahrenheit outside; half a tank of 87 octane gas; I did not remove anything (spare tire, rear seats) and I had my 17” wheels on.
I did about 7 runs, all between 17.28 and 17.78. Best run (launching at around 3000rpm, not too much spin): RT = 0.910 60' = 2.493 330' = 7.518 1/8 = 11.073 @ 63.234 MPH 1/4 = 17.279 @ 78.758 MPH I was hoping for a time around 16.6 or 16.7. What the hell! Is that a normal time? Should I put higher octane gas next time? Can my 17” wheel be the problem? I don’t know what to think. I’m running slower than a stock Focus! Anyway, it’s a punch in the face. (I went there with two other guys and they were running .2 or .3 seconds slower than the week before, so, I don’t know)

how fast do you shift? what gear are you trapping with? (ie what gear do you pass through the line with)

I shift at around 6000rpm. I pass the line in 3rd at like 6200rpm. (I’m shifting at 6000rpm because with the Volant intake, the power is now 500rpm higher… before it started to pull at around 3000rpm, now it’s at 3500rpm. I can feel there's some juice left until I reach 6000rpm)
If I finish in 4th, it would only be for the last 2 seconds, so I figure it’s a waste of time. And I don't feel a lot of power in 4th. Like “thefrush” said, maybe I just need more practice.

Your trap speed is incredibly slow, doesn't make any sense.
Also, are you sure you were at 6200 when your trap speed was only 78mph? I know personally in third at 6200 Im at 85mph or so. |

Yep, close to 6200. I'm doing something wrong for sure. Next time I'll try to shift at 5500 / or finish in 4th to see.
I have a Beltronic so I can always practice a little to have an idea. Thanks for your comments BLKZX3.

I dont know too much about the zetec models, the gearing or anything. But one thing is for sure unless you have a lot of power you should not be trapping in fourth. If you have 4.06 final drive gears then you would be trapping in 4th. But the 3.41 or 3.82 you should cross in 3rd
