Lose acceleration on 2014 Focus

Hello All
While driving on the freeway a week ago, my brand new 5-speed manual Focus lost acceleration. I was able to maintain speed, but speeding up was almost impossible. I pulled off the freeway, and stopped the car to look for the nearest Ford dealer. When I started up the car again, the acceleration had returned. I ended up taking it to my local dealership, but since the problem wasn't persisting, they couldn't find anything wrong. They said that all the information in the computer was erased when I turned the car off, so they couldn't extract any info about the car's performance from the computer. The problem hasn't happened again, but I am a little concerned that there may be something wrong with the car. I had put about 1000 miles on the car when this happened, so it is pretty discouraging to be having problems with a new car. I know there have been acceleration problems with Foci in prior model years, but I can't find a similar problem for the 2014 Focus. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Neil

Moved your post to it's own thread in the MkIII section, you'll get quicker replies this way.

Look in the TSB & Recall section to see if anything fits your symptoms exactly.

I've seen a couple similar myself, but the details varied.

Question

Any check engine light or trouble codes (turning off the car doesn't erase them)

I used to have this problem with my 2013 5-speed, the gas would completely cut off (usually at highway speed) and would come back if I restarted the car. The third time it happened, I called out of work and turned around to take it to the dealer so they could run tests while it was still doing it. Their diagnosis was, shockingly, it was not getting enough gas. They said probably another few miles and the engine light would have turned on.

Long story short, they replaced my fuel pump with a high pressure unit, under warranty, and I haven't had the problem since (about 10k miles). However, I have lost about 2 mpg since then but the cold weather could be contributing to that. Good luck, I know for me it was definitely scary to have the throttle just cut out... pretty dangerous if you're making a left turn in an intersection.

This thread deals with this issue. In other vehicles, it has been related to the high pressure fuel pump and/or the throttle body. Either way, it is covered by your new car warranty.

Your car has 2 fuel pumps. A low pressure pump in the tank, and a high pressure pump that sits on the valve cover (driven by a camshaft lobe). They replaced your HP pump. When this pump fails, the fuel system is unable to provide the pressure it needs for acceleration....which is upto 2150 psi under WOT. If the HP fails, the system will only have 40-60ish psi that will keep the car idling, and keep it running under very light load but you'll have lack of power/rough running whenever a higher pressure is required. The computer will try to compensate via fuel trims by holding the injectors open longer but that only works upto a very small point.

Thank You

Thank you all for your suggestions. Sailor, thank you for moving the post to this section. Wavsine, thank you for pointing out that other thread. I'm sorry so many others have had this scary problem, but I now have some ideas to bring to my local Ford dealer. I haven't had the problem again, but I am hoping to get the bottom of this. Thanks for all the advice.

cheers
neil

Has anyone heard of this issue with a DCT equipped car?

It seems that any Focus with a DCT never has engine related issues because all driveability problems are blamed on a faulty transmission.

Next time don't turn it off, go straight to the nearest local Ford dealer!

My 2013 SE did the exact same thing a couple days ago, looks like I'm off to the dealership.
