2012 Focus Overheating

My 2012 Focus SEL auto has a troubling issue that may or not relate
to the overheating issue in this thread.

I purchased it in April and have travelled approx 20 k miles.

At approx 17 k miles, I encountered that sweet coolant smell
eminating from the front of the car after every commute,

The temperature guage never moves from the normal range
and there is no leakage.

I brought the car into the selling dealer.. they agreed there was a strong coolant odor but could only do a visual inspection as they stated" they didn't have the correct Rotunda tool to pressure test the system".

They also said this was a 1st report of this issue and that there were
no Ford Bulletins.

I brought the car in 9 days after the 1st visit and they still have not
received the testing equipment.

The smell continues.

I am very concerned that I'm slowly cooking my engine.

My new Focus experienced a similar problem of overheating last evening. I had driven about 60 miles on the turnpike at about 75mph and then into stop and go traffic about a mile from home. All of a sudden go the message that the engine has overheated and I should stop when safe. The temperature guage was maxed out high. Turned off AC and temp came down a little bit so the guage was indicating.

I continued to drive for another couple of minutes until out of traffic and home. Checked under the hood and noticed that the radiator cooling fan was not operating dispite the engine still indicating above the middle of the guage.

Drove car to work 30 miles this morning and the temperature guage rose to a normal indication and stayed in the middle of the guage. I used AC the last 5 miles and no change in engine temperature indication. Outside temp 64 deg.

I checked the coolant fan when I got to work and it was not operating so It may be a fan issue but outside temps was low enough to not let engine overheat.

Need to take it in but if no indications of the issue from yesterday it may be a waste of time. I do a lot of driving so don't want it to happen when I'm out on the turnpike again.

Mine turned out to be a problem with the cooling fan. I only had the issue one time, but took folks advice to take it in. Glad I did. The service was good, got a rental car and then my car back in a day. No issues since but also have the peace of mind that I don't need to worry about it.

Definitely take your Focus to the local Ford dealership for a check up. At the same time send me a PM with the VIN, current mileage, as well as your personal contact and dealer info, and I'll have the Customer Service Manager in your area review your case.

I bought this car last year. The overheating issue has happened to me 3 times just this week alone. It first happened last year. I brought it in and it was determined that it was a faulty fan, which was replaced.

It went for several months doing great, but then just a few days ago it happened again. Same problem, fan again.

I have a few ideas why this happens. I think the car is drawing too much power and blowing fuses. This happens when my AC is on, along with 2 AC adapters in my car (GPS and iPod).

Any ideas would be helpful, I love my focus and this is depressing

I bought my 2012 Focus SE Hatch in February and it has now overheated 3 times. The heat also only work intermittently, which I am just learning now that the weather is getting cool again. It has 21000 miles on it and the first time it overheated was around 18k.

I love my car and I am very disappointed that this is happening. It has been to the dealer once already and they told me there is nothing wrong with it. They told me I probably ran over something that punctured the coolant line but were unable to detect a leak. I was pretty disappointed to be told it was my fault and nothing they could do.

I have an appointment on Monday for it again. I will probably take it there today though and demand a loaner car because I have to make a 6 hour round trip tomorrow and don't trust my brand-new car :(

Thanks for your help. Our Ford dealership has been really great to deal with except for this one issue. The car is there now and I'll update with what happens. If they aren't willing to investigate further I will certainly utilize your help in pushing the issue.

ok my 2012 focus with 2800 miles has overheated on me a couple times. i stop and the temp comes down. coolant tank full,fan running,flaps open. Doesnt always happen. but when it does if i slow down to 45mph or less it cools down. Anything over 45mph the temp gauge starts creeping up again. stop or slow down it it drops back to normal?? any ideas. my local ford dealer is a joke and i want to be prepared before i go.
