So the only way this works is when there's a road side emergency or hazard? Or is there another function like turn signal like an Audi does? I don't see the point of doing this.

I assume he has them wired to work as a turn signal. I found these a couple weeks back here:

Ahh got it. I didn't notice it changing to orange the first time. I thought it was the reflection of orange from the turn signal. That is a nice feature.
