PSA for anyone who has taken off the Calipers
OK well a long painful story made short I was on my way back from Chattanooga, TN and heard something scraping. I stopped looked at tires, wheels, and air pressure. All looked fine... so about 100 miles down the road I hear it again, and it's LOUDER. So I pull off the road again and take a look, and look what I found...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I can only assume when we pulled them off to paint them we didn't tighten the bolts on very tight. AND apparently we are supposed to put bolt lock onto them before putting them back on. But due to the horrendous road conditions in Louisiana and Mississippi the bolts backed out and were lost. Also for anyone planning on driving that way the interstates are washboard roads now and are NOT good for your car. SO onto the Public Service Announcement, "If you plan on painting your Calipers be sure to put Thread lock onto the bolt before replacing the bolts, or you might damage your rims when they pop off. As for damage there are some blue scratches on the inside of my rim and damage to the balancing weights. The other caliper was about to come off but was hanging in there by just a little bit.

Well it is good to hear that your calipers did not actually fall off while driving. That would have been horrendous.

yeah last thing you want is a brake caliper flying around in your rims and your car spinning when you brake. glad that there was no real damage done could have been a lot worse.

When we put Chappa's caliper's back on ... we didn't use Bolt Locks ... and **KNOCK ON WOOD** They are holding on just fine.
I think they just needed to be real good on there ... not tight enough or something. Also good to hear nothing else happened man. I would also Check the Shims on those ... since they broke loose ... I hope those Shims didn't get a bit bent or pop off ... you will hear alot of grinding later if you have some loose/bent shims. Just ask Chappa (Gerold). -Ray-

BACON?

Yes, Bolts = Important.
I made the same mistake on my first brake job in High school auto shop. Luckily my teacher took it for a test drive and the issue was caught right away.
