Funny enough, I set out that day for the natural history museum and zoo and only wanted to have one lens with me. I figured my 14-42mm kit lens would be more versatile, so I left the macro at home. Sure enough, I ended up wanting the macro lens when I stepped into Butterflies Alive! Oh well, next time I'll wear cargo shorts and keep an extra lens handy.

^^ Sometimes you never know what gear you want to use until you get to a location shooting.

I have done photo-walks with one lens before and it's tough to resist changing lenses ... but doing things like that helps you understand the limitation of the lens you are currently using and testing your own skills.

Speaking of changing lenses, while we were at the zoo I saw some guy switching the lens on his camera while he was standing next to the elephants, who were covered in dust and kicking it up all over the place. I wanted to cry.

Couple more cloud pics.

Really like the lens or window glare on this one. Def adds to the photo.

What type of body? Did you know many of the High End Pro-bodies can take dust like no other and still work flawlessly?

We use Nikon D3s' at my current studio for our on location shoots and are many times in very very very dirty and dusty locations. But when we come back to the office and bring the equipment to a cleaning specialist, most of the time they only clean the outside for us and tell us the inside is just fine. No dust what so ever. They have justified at least 35% of their cost right there.

It looked like a pretty basic consumer level Canon body. You saying that cameras like the D3 can even take just being left open to the elements with no lens or body cap on, though? That's hardcore.

I'm on vacation in Vail, CO (hence no substantive posts as of late) and I've had to change lenses on the side of a bike trail in the weeds etc. I try to keep the body facing down but sometimes it's not possible. A few sensor dust specks to clone out in post maybe but that's easy peasy.

If you wanna know how much dust is on your sensor, go to a high f# and shoot a pic of a white or grey object that fills the frame. You'll see little grey specks. You probably won't see the dust in the final pictures unless you're at a high f# anyway...

I get back from Vail July 24th so be ready for some epic pics. It's gorgeous up here!

^^ Content aware CS5 ... FTW!!!

@YellowJellyBean - > it is indeed hardcore. I have seen the Nikon High End cameras, the Canon High End Cameras, the leicas, the Mamiyas and Hassalblad cameras take some major beatings over the years through dust and sprinkles and still work as if new.

And some in some major climates. Had to shoot in North East Russia one time in -15 degree whether and our D90 froze up for a moment, but the D3 kept going ... and another photographer with us was shooting with a Medium Mamiya that was taking the extreme cold as well. And on the other end, my fellow colleagues in the office went to Abu Dhabi and shot in extreme heat and same thing.

So, yes some hardcore stuff. You can't submerge the cameras obviously, but they can be in the elements and keep on trucking.

Not too happy with this one. Gonna actually clean the car and try again. Need to get some fresh shots with the white wheels.
