When I shoot sports, I usually stay in Automatic focus. But I also shoot with sports aimed cameras. I have a Nikon D300s as my sports camera that has continuous 3D focus. Basically, as long as the subject is in the focus point they will stay in focus for all of the shots.

Now, I thought they added that feature to all of the new cameras now ... did they not have that on your D3000?

Shots didn't turn out very good but last time I tried using automatic focus for drifting I had to wait for it to focus, if it could even find a point to focus on at all. Ended up missing more shots that way, although the shots I did get were a little more clear.

I figured a newer camera like the D3000 wouldn't be like that. Been thinking about taking some classes at the local community college and upgrading to a T3i. Any other camera suggestions? Wanting to look into something not too fancy and expensive since I'm still not all that great yet.

It just looks that way ... that Evo is actually one of the fastest in our region. His car drifts like crazy, and most times when you drift you are losing time. For some odd reason ... he doesn't lol.

It's a hoot to ride with him.

That's interesting. Well, maybe the D3100 has the upgrade for continuous focus. I haven't looked in that category of DSLR in very long time.

The Canon T3i is a great camera, but if you are already shooting with the Nikon and have a couple of lenses ... why switch?

Honestly, both Nikon or Canon have great cameras, and each have cameras that have their weak points and strong points.

So, the question to help you find the right camera for you is, what is it that you primarily shoot or want to shoot?

No one camera is great for everything. So, finding what you mainly want to do is the best idea.

I own a D300s for sports and a D800 and D600 for portraits.
