I'm not a pro at this type of thing, but I'm pretty sure you need to bounce more light on her. Some simple solutions for this are windshield reflectors or a dry-erase white board. Not bad shots, though.

Do you do any post? I only ask because the photos seem a bit flat in color.

When doing portraits, be mindful of hands. Especially when putting them close to the face. A good portrait makes a person look good as well as looking natural. The hand in the second photo is a bit unnatural feeling, as if she wasn't sure where to put it and just decided to put it on her cheek.

If you are thinking about doing more in the future, I would recommend you invest in a reflector to start. That will help with shooting outside. Getting the exposure of the person to better match the exposure of the scene.

But for your first, they aren't a bad start. Keep practicing. Grab a couple of friends and test your shots on them more before going out and working with people that aren't friends.

Also, choose a more dynamic scene for her or any of your subjects. Find anything that can add to the shot some. Like a broken wooden fence for instance or even a pasture with horses in the background, it will give more character to the shot as well and make it look more appealing than just grass and blue/white skies.

More tips for Portraits, always focus on the eyes. Especially if you are going with some low aperture settings or telephoto. The eyes are the first thing most people look at when checking out their photo, it will determine a focused or un-focused subject.

Also, carefully choose the right lenses. Wide lenses are great for cars, but not for people. It tends to make people look bloated or chubbier than they really are. But vice versa, super telephoto lenses can squeeze their face or buddy funny as well.

For portraits, stick with the hilariously effective 50mm lens, Nikon or Canon.

I find that 35 is good for cars but 50 works best on people. Never got the hang of 85 lenses but to each their own in that regard.

^^ I like that shot a lot more than the ones where you crank up the shadows and highlights too much.
