You can get a D3100 to start out with that comes with an 18-55 lense at Target for $549.
for $649, you can get a D5100 with an 18-55 lense.

If you buy his used for 300 without a lense and go buy lenses, itll cost more in my opinion or about the same for used.

Wait, you can get D5100's for less than $700? For reals? I'm looking in the wrong places.

It's the same price pretty much everywhere. I would say go with BHPhoto, Adorama, or Amazon. You can get them with the 18-55 kit lens for $650 or body-only for $550. I would say get the body-only version and put the $100 towards better lenses. The Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 is a great lens and goes for $200 brand new (you can find gently used ones for 150-175). Personally, I'd rather have two zoom lenses: a dedicated super wide (<24mm) and a dedicated telephoto (>70mm) with maybe a prime lens or two between those.

If you want a decent all-around zoom lens that you're not just going to throw away eventually, drop the cash on a 17-55 f/2.8 or the hard-to-find 16-85 f/3.5-5.6.

To the fellow asking about the D3000: sure, it's a fine camera, but the interface is a little too patronizing in my opinion. The D5100 is a really great camera. The only reason anyone would need a D7000 over the D5100 is for the heavier duty body and more knobs and buttons (I love knobs and buttons, which is why I love my D90).

I hate talking about gear and not pictures, so here's a picture!

I've got a few of the explosive variety.

I've got tons more, but those are some of my favorites.
