You don't necessarily have to do that. Read through your manual about what you can do with it. There are ways to define which point to use as the focus point for autofocus. It's one of the most recent things I've learned about on my D90 and I use it all the time.

Cars are much easier to me than people. Cars don't squint when faced into the sun. Cars don't slouch. Cars don't complain when you ask them to take off their glasses so you don't get glare. You don't have to worry (as much) about a car's skin tone.
