I know. Many people do. I just give those who do it to create professional vids a hard time about it. Sure still many of the DSLR video looks great. But its the compression and color recording that the sensors do that bother me about DSLR video.

but eh, that's the video editor in me talking. The fun camera operator in me just says, COOL!!!

I tend to prefer video shot with a DSLR. Its not perfect, most of them don't auto-focus, and the video quality always has a really airy sort of indie feel to it.

Well, the audience that DSLRs hit are Low-budget film-makers. And that look is beginning to become more standard for even broadcast television.

Broadcast cameras both in the big budget and small budget groups are more in focus, meaning less depth of field, less subject projected focus. More seeing the whole picture.

I for one dont like DSLRs for the compression they use and the way the board processes color and noise in video. Plus the fact audio is a pain and editing is a pain in post. So, I opted for the middle group, being that I am a broadcast and creative professional videographer. Creative in terms of the content: bands, fashion and commercial gigs. So I bit the bullet for the Sony FS100. Proper camera with XLRs, full 4:2:2 color compression and in full 1080p HD at 24-28 mbps information. And the dynamic range is amazing. And the new wonderful sensor, the S35. (Super 35, basically a sensor the size of 35mm).

Plus, less moire and rolling shutter. Dont get me wrong, love the small factor and quality you can shoot with a DSLR video rig, but these new Large format cameras like my FS100 now use interchangeable lenses from Nikon, Canon, PL, Ziess and Sony and have that same feel as a DSLR with a properly enhanced video codec.

Kind of a joke . . . one of my students, during the height of the Ivy League "sleep with your Professor" rage . . . said "maybe for $10,000".

She's a good friend too . . . many of you have see her house on tv . . . and as a joke she arrived home to find me laying in her bed with the $10,000 in 1's and 5's.

She's got a pretty good sense of humor . . . famous model, architect and,most recently, Project Manager for the largest construction project in NYC.
