He just wants them for forums and Facebook and such. I can't honestly think of a car person that would want framed prints of their car...that's just weird in my mind...I know I wouldn't.

We've already talked about my feelings on watermarking. However I might watermark a few of the better ones. I do not have a well designed attractive watermark though. If anyone wants to throw one together for me that would be fantastic! I know we've got some skilled graphic designers in here. There would be some rep points in it for ya... PM me. :)

What do you do in a situation like this? Charge for the shoot and then charge per digital file?

I actually have had a few guys buy prints from me of their cars.

Well ... I guess for your situation ... charge for the shoot ... Of which you should have collected already. And then send him files with a logo bug. Honestly, that's the pro thing to do. Protect your work, to an extent.

Then if he wants a file without your bug ... then talk to him about it explain its a great way to have you be noticed by others to come and visit. Not stamping, paid work is like throwing away leads and money. Especially if you want to start doing it more on a paid stand point.

He should understand. I do that with all of my models I shoot and all of my clients that pay for my professional services.

For getting paid at the gig ... look into getting a card reader for your phone. I have one for credit cards through my bank (Chase). Being able to take CC helps me with all my transactions and it's easier to bill and for taxes later. Less headache than Checks and Cash ... on a business stand point.

Well he didn't get paid until today. He's my buddy (well more of an acquaintance really) so I'm not worried about him paying up.

I will look into either making or having a watermark made. I'm not so good with the professional graphics design stuff... All my stuff comes out looking rinky dink.

I'm considering posting an ad on my local CL site advertising automotive photography services. I'm not exactly certain how much one charges for a shoot. $50? $75? I told my Mustang friend that I'd do it for $30, (I make minimum wage so $30 is like 4 hours work for me on a normal day) but he's my friend not a stranger. It's probably different with people you don't know...

Well ... I don't mind helping you design one. What are you looking for?

And ouch 30!!! ... Won't make money in the Still Photo field charging that ...

You need to think outside the box:
1 Gas
2 Cost of equipment
3 Lenses
4 Time
5 Convenience
6 Insurance
7 Wear and tear on both your ride and your camera

These are things you think about when you jump into the field as a pro. I have broken it down for me so that I can make a living do this. If you need any help figuring a cost, let me know as well.

Like I said. $30 was just...because...he's my friend. I wasn't even gonna charge but he offered so I thought why not. Because I'm making minimum wage $30 is a lot of time at my day job. Besides, shooting is something I love to do and if I can get paid anything (even a pittance) it's better than doing it for free...

Also, I'm going to PM you in a second.

You need to pick and choose your "Volunteer" work (free work).

I usually write off "Volunteer" work ... but that's because I already have a structure to do that. 8 years in the field definitely gets you going in the right direction.

Anyways ... I received your PM and will chat with you to get you on the right foot here ... even if you are only doing it part-time.

These days ... many Pro/Semi-Pro Photogs are doing it part time with a side gig.

Would working at a JCPenney portrait studio be a soul sucking job? I'm considering it...

I need a second job to pay for my hobby...

lol you like taking pics in the same spot with a bunch of whiny kids? That's my impression anyway.

and yeah... please view in as little resolution as possible, it takes the "suck" out of my camera that way. Took it last night on my way back from work. It is what it is; a cell phone pic. but I think it could have been cool if I had my real camera.
