Is that book more about how to light a subject to better photograph it? The thing I like about Understanding Exposure is that it seems to be equal parts what's in front of the camera, what's inside the camera, and how to approach things from behind the camera. Hey, that's kinda poetic. I'm not saying that book won't be useful to me, since all of the photography I do at work is artificial lighting in a "studio" set up.

Fun fact: On Amazon, the most frequently purchased bundle with Light: Science and Magic is Understanding Exposure and The Photographer's Eye, the other two books I currently have. Right now the 2007 edition is like $27, but they're releasing a new version this year, which will be like $35. From your experience in lighting, do you think there are going to be new things in the new version worth waiting for, or has much changed in the last 4 years as far as lighting goes?

Well the old one was geared towards the Film and early days of Digital Photography.

So, the new edition will probably be more geared towards todays Digital formats.

Honestly ... not much of a difference. Lighting has changed for years on either side of still photography or motion photography (video).

Light still falls the same way, so, I say just get the old one.

Thanks. No prints just digital files. I'm assuming he just wants to whore it out online.

Are you going to Charge for your digital files?

That's money out of your pocket from prints. I always explain to my clients the difference between myself printing it for them and them taking it to Walgreens/Eckerds/CVS/Walmart etc.

Also ... that's your work just going to whomever.

Or at least stamp your bug on there and request that they not crop it out.

You can't stop anyone from printing your work ... but if your bug is on there then they would have to crop then print (which most people won't do out of respect for the photographer) or if they print it with your bug ... it's free advertising.

This is a defining moment that separates you from the Amateur level to the Pro level ... and it keeps the Still Photography field even and true and also educates people on the hard work and reasoning behind paying for still custom pro work.
