would the canon on the right (one for $329) be a sufficient lens? besides not having quite as high as a maximum aperture (2.0 vs 1.4), the angle view, and the diaphragm blades (5 vs 8 on the other two), a lot of other parameters seem to be the same. aside from being cheaper it also has a shorter minimum focus distance (9.8" vs 1') which might be kind of nice for some close up shots.

speaking of diaphragm blades, does anyone mind explaining the real difference of having more? sharper images? faster shutter speeds?

more diaphragm blades translates to better bokeh and OOF area quality. Don't think it'll really have any effect on sharpness and shutter speed. I would go with the 35. 18mm is bordering on too wide. Keep in mind a lot of the stuff I have recently been posting has been taken with my Sigma Ultra Wide Angle lens which is a 10-20mm. 18mm falls within that range...

The blades will effect Bokeh and light stars the most.

If you take an out of focus shot with your lens and have some lights staring at you, you will see the they are either rounded or jagged. Most pros like the rounded soft ones than the jagged look. More appealing. The more the blades the softer that is (bokeh).

On Light stars, like shooting a car and having the sun or a street light beam at you, you will notice a star like a effect be added to your photo. The points on that effects will be how many blades your camera has.

Other than that, they are there to hold on to the aperture diagram and effect how wide or closed in a lens can get.

As for your lenses you posted, Yes the 35f/2.0 would suffice. You really would only be losing half a stop from the 1.8.

It's still tukani over there ... but instead of SVT it's tukaniray.

Lol ... you will see me all over that area. Both in the People and car photo area and in the local scene. And the video section as well, since my main world revolves around video.

Yup, straight out pro-post editor here.

Its only worth upgrading your body if your current body is limiting you in some way.

For example; I'm due for an upgrade now. My Rebel XS cannot handle medium and high ISO. Anything 400 and above is noticeably grainy. This is limiting to me at this point.
