The best mileage that was recorded was 33 and quickly went down to 31. It was nice & warm outside, flat highway, no hills....

My car is @ the dealer today to address the clunking and the TSB 12B37... we'll see if mileage gets better after the transmission re-flash.

I know something isn't right my car since out of the Foci reporting back their mpg on Fuelly.com, might is completlely off charts for the moment. But I see that I get better mileage at every new tank, but others seem to have mid-30s right out of the dealer!
Yeah, my numbers are pretty much all with two average adults and a couple carry-on sized bags. Not sure how much the extra weight impacts. I guess you'll know if you try this alone or with a single passenger. I reset my 'Trip 1' every fill-up but am resetting the 'Trip 2' MPG constantly to see what the MPG is in different conditions.

Four tanks in, averaging 35.0.

Code:
Date Miles Gal.	MPG Price	City %

4	6/4/12	363.8 10.96	33.2 3.089	50%
3	5/24/12	434.3 11.85	36.7 3.339	50%
2	5/12/12	369.9 10.95	33.8 3.509	75%
1	5/3/12	388.4 10.75	36.1 3.639	25%
Per-tank averages are all over the place, but as the % shows I've varied lot between highway/city. Tank #4 was my usual driving assortment but was spent entirely in sport mode shifting "manually" with the button... way more fun but cost me 3.5 mpg!

I managed 331mi on 11.4 gallons this week for a mpg of 29. That's suburban driving.

I am getting anywhere from 32.5 to about 35.0 with 20 percent City, 80 Highway miles. I would expect the motor to loosen up to the 10,000 mark. 10,000 mark and they all get sweet with a good break in.

I don't believe C&D's numbers here for a second. They're either lying, were supplied with a modified car or two, or got a bad Focus.

I just came back from a 1700-mile road trip with my 5-speed, which had under 3,000 miles on it when I left home.

The 5-speed has a shorter top gear than the DCT, and I still pulled out 37-39 mpg consistently over 5 fill-ups, with an average in the 38's. The trip was roughly 75% freeway miles, and I did my best to keep the cruise set at 73, including through southern and central Vermont where there are some -significant- mountains requiring serious throttle to climb and where you don't get all that fuel back because coasting down the other side would have you going 90 mph.

So I find it hard to swallow that the automatic Focus isn't getting at least 39 at semi-reasonable speeds on the highway.

And I'm sorry, but I don't believe for a second that that Mazda actually gets 45 MPG highway. I've also read (anecdotally I admit) that the Hyundai's aren't living up to their ratings.

I'm a bit heavy on the pedal and almost all the driving has been in suburbia so I'm only getting a little under 28mpg. Still 12mpg better than my 4Runner.

Anybody have some REAL numbers for effect on mileage due to A/C use?

I noticed my last tank dropped about 2 mpg to around 31.5 for no apparent reason, and this tank looks to be even worse (computer currently reading about 30.5). This is after getting 33-34 over several tanks on my commute. The most likely culprit is increased A/C use - I used to use it only in the afternoon but started carpooling recently and I'm using A/C in the morning now too for the benefit of my passenger. But a 2-3mpg hit was much more than I was expecting.

The other main possibility is bad gas - I'll be switching stations next fill up to see if there's any effect.

I don't have concrete real-world numbers, unfortunately. But my experience has been just what you said: a 2 or 3 mpg hit. I think if you read up online you'll see that's roughly the conventional wisdom, too.

The dogma is something to the effect of driving with your windows down at 60 mph causes the same loss as running the a/c with the windows up. I do -not- believe this to be the case on the 2012 Focus. I think you're going to do better with the windows down through much higher speeds. And, if you can drive with the windows partially open instead of fully down, better still.

I get pretty kickass mileage in this car consistently, and others here have chalked it up to my driving style. And while I'll admit that's a big part of it, remember that I'm getting 38 mpg in this car when I would have gotten 24 at best in my OHV V6 Taurus. This car is more than 50% better. This is a pretty seriously efficiently vehicle for the power it makes considering it's not a diesel. There's still plenty more efficiency to gain, but compared to what we had available just 10 years ago, I think this is a pretty great car.

Thanks. Yeah I'm still happy since I'm still getting the EPA combined rating but I guess I was really getting used to beating it by 2-3 mpg. I might try to do a controlled test this weekend, maybe a 5-mile loop w/ AC and another one without to determine the actual hit.
