Yeabbut it would bring all of them up by 3mpg, give or take.

These results gel pretty well with Popular Mechanics' comparison of the Focus and Elantra. They had very similar economy ratings until the 70mph highway test - the Elantra held steady around 40mpg and the Focus plummeted to 33mpg. Obviously the primary tradeoff is the Focus's quicker 0-60.

If I drive my Focus on the highway at 65-70 I get 37MPG even if I throw in a little stop and go.

I know what you mean. I get 3-4 MPG average better than my '01 Focus, using the same driving habits plus an additional 30 HP. I'll take that too!

I believe it's this month's issue. I saw it in the supermarket a few days ago. The C & D article should be found easily online.

I googled quite a bit and searched the C&D site with no luck. Will have to hit the newsstand. I think a lot of magazines hold back some of their material from the web at least for a while because otherwise the paper mag would never sell.[All speculation..]

You're probably right. The website still shows the June issues as current. This is in the July issue with the S6, M5 and E63 on the front cover.

Don't get your hopes up though, it's not an in depth article by any means. Just a paragraph and a brief table on about a half dozen 40mpg-ish cars, in the same section as the full review of the Dart.

No, that's what I'm saying. Not all cars break in the same, so expecting a constant increase across all the cars isn't necessarily a good approach. The other ones could go up by 5 and the focus by 3, but I'm merely noting that it's not a fair test for the life of the vehicle.

In any case, I think it's been pretty well demonstrated by now that the Focus's mileage drops off more significantly with increased speed than the average compact car. Car & Driver, Popular Mechanics, and it was an extensive subject on this forum a couple months back...

Hmm, I was in fact hoping for more detail and explanations. This just seems too big a gap to believe:

Mazda3 Skyactiv: 45
Focus: 36

I wonder what conditions/speed these numbers were at? In summer, with no headwind or hills, I can get 39-40 at 65 MPH so the 36 seems low. But, even that would still be way behind 45 MPG?? Aerodynamics? Final gear ratio? I know the sky-active has a lot of technology that helps in city driving but I don't know what they would do at hwy cruise that would make such a difference...
