By now you should be seeing your average fuel economy. I've only made it past the third tank one time before having a reset done to my car, but there was always a noticeable improvement by then of sbout 5-7 additional mpg's.

You gave us everything but your speed. Are you afraid? Have you gone north of 120 kph? Next time use the cruise as much as you can and stay at or below 115 kph. I get 37 mpg (87 octane E10). With or without passengers shouldn't matter on flat roads.

My daily commute is 33% rural (40 km @ 60 kph and 67% Hwy (80 km @ 115 kph)

More proof the Focus is a relative dog regarding highway mileage.

Car and Driver's latest issue compares several cars in the 40-ish-mpg club. Results:

C/D observed highway economy:
Mazda3 Skyactiv: 45
Elantra: 41
Focus: 36
Cruze: 36

Max Speed for 40mpg:
Mazda3 Skyactiv: 76
Elantra: 74
Cruze: 69
Focus: 66

Why?????????????????????????????????

IMO, the amenities of the Focus really make up for it. Sync is a must! Of course, that's for me. I'm coming from a 14.9mpg Hemi truck. :p I would have liked to see 35mpg but I'm yet to take it on a trip so I might still. I'm averaging 30.4mpg around town.

Why!!?? is a downright good question.

Do you have a link to the C&D article or do I have to go find a paper copy? Do you know what month's issue has this?

If they tested a new car perhaps it wasn't broken in. Many observe a hefty increase after a few thousand miles.

It's the latest issue I just got in the mail on Friday.

You'd think all the cars they tested were new though so they'd all suffer the same disadvantage. The whole mileage increase with break in thing is overstated in my opinion. I've seen maybe a 3 mpg increase overall with 4,500 miles. I looked at a bunch of fuelly.com user data and some seemed to go up, others down, over time since new.

It's likely they all had some sort of break in issue with their results, but that doesn't mean it affects every car the same. A 3mpg increase would bring it to a respectful 39.

On another note, I thought about how I tend to accelerate aggressively. I drive the same style that I did in my old Camaro and get 2x the gas mileage. I'll take that.
