Why should everyone have to drive to the maximum speed limit, reduce fuel economy, increase wear and tear on the driveline as well as tires, increase the likelihood of life ending injuries from an accident, etc.? Getting from point A to point B is not a race.

Relax and get to your destination in one piece and not in a coffin.

Not at the max speed limit, 10mph above the posted speed limit. That's what everyone should do, all the time, everywhere.

Just reached 1,200 miles on my SEL and I'm averaging 31.7 - 32 MPG in all around city traffic. I have seen 42 MPG sustained on the interstate (4-5 miles) under ideal conditions at 67mph.

I did this mostly for my benefit, since I'm about to go on a drive. Numbers for gas price are about what's average for around here, but the "time per hour" will obviously changed based on real mpg numbers and your local gas prices.

Math time!

Say you're going on a 400 mile trip. You get 40 mpg at 70 mph, and 35 mpg at 75 mph.

At 70, you get there in 5.71 hours. You burn 10 gallons of gas.

At 75, you get there in 5.33 hours. You burn 11.43 gallons of gas.

Gas costs 3.80/gallon. Therefore, you save $5.43, but it takes you 0.38 hours longer to get there.

This equates to a savings of $14.29/hour. Is your time worth more than $14.29/hour?

I would've thought that if it was due to the shutters, and the base SE's also got the shutters that they'd increase to 29/39. But recent SE arrivals at Brandon Ford near me are still at 28/38. So either the base SE's are not being equipped with the acitve shutters now or they're now somehow getting around the select shift penalty they used to get.
All Job 2 Focus' get the grill shutters now. It used to be only the cold weather states or the SFE model.

I'm averaging 31.7 in my SEL; combined highway, country road, city. That's 10mpg more than the car traded in - nice. Going on a trip today, going to cheat and reset right when I hit the highway to see what I get .

Right. The question was is that the reason for the models with Select Shift (SE Sport, SEL, Ti) getting a pump in EPA ratings to 28/38. I don't think it is. Otherwise the SE, which was already at 28/38, should get a bump to 29/39.

Likewise, the manual is still rated 26/36.

I just looked... My 5 speed, which I bought on 3/19, DOES have the shutters. (How do I find my build date?) And the sticker says 26/36. I'm glad to have the tiny bump in fuel economy, but I dislike that SFE is touted for the shutters when it's coming on every car now. There's got to be a good reason they're putting this on all of them now.

So I tend to agree that it's not the shutters that are producing the bulk of the MPG gain.

For the SFE I imagine it's more about the wheels than anything else.

There's a sticker in the drivers door jam; you can find the build date there.

Just looked. "DATE: 12/11" I bought in mid-March.

Did this thing really sit on the lot for 3 months? I wouldn't think Ford would keep an inventory that long.
