My first post here! :)

'12 SE sedan, 5 speed manual, steel 16's.

I've only filled up once since the dealer filled it when I bought it 2 weeks ago. I let the gas pump shut off on it's own and didn't add another drop since I figured this is what the dealer did, at best.

I got 34.4 MPG over about 250 miles. This is with neutral costing, predictive stops, slow acceleration, etc.

My mileage computer claimed 37.2 IIRC. It gave me a totally bunk reading on my drive home of 43.5. I assume that's part of why the computer read 3mpg high. My best theory is the computer takes a little time to get accurate.

I have a 22-mile commute that includes something around 15 to 30 stops each trip depending on traffic and how I hit the lights.

I'll be filling up again this week and I'll report back on the second tank if I remember it.

You should do better coasting in gear. In gear, the injectors will shut off when you're coasting. In neutral, the engine must burn fuel to run at idle.

That's brilliant. Has anyone been able to test & confirm? Do we know anything about what conditions cause the injectors to shut off?

Also, hypothetically... Let's say you're riding down a long, slow hill doing 65mph on the highway. Assuming you're unwilling to shut off the engine... Do you a) coast in neutral if it allows you to maintain 65 without touching the accelerator, or b) leave it in 5th but hold down the accelerator to maintain speed because powertrain friction slows you down?

It will shut the injectors off as long as you're off the gas and above idle RPM. As I understand it, this is how most, if not all, modern FI vehicles operate.

My 2012 SEL still sees its Avg MPG readout increase.

As of today it's 30.1.

I've only driven winter blend gasoline so far, and typical fill-ups have seen 27~30MPG, which is fantastic. Both fill-ups that is, I'm almost at my third and I've driven 732 miles, so my net MPG so far is 31.016949... which is sweet given winter blend gas...

As for absolute lows and highs, I've not yet tabulated... but I tend to do more city driving than highway...

Figured I'd throw my stats in so far.

Car: 2012 Ford Focus S
Transmission: 5 Speed Manual

The first 3 fill-ups were 80-90% city driving and it was still within the break-in period.

All fill-ups were with 87 octane mostly from Krogers Fuel. The last 2 fill-ups were from Sunoco.

So far I have been very happy with the fuel efficiency as it has been pretty close to what was advertised. I know the first 1k miles we are not suppose to record our MPG but I did it anyway for my records. Also the last tank MPG were lower as I got a little rev happy since the break-in period was over so I gave it some gas a few times on the on ramps to the highway.

I know, not as detailed as most of you, but I'm averaging about 31, mostly city.
