I'm at 21,000 miles and consistently getting over 39 MPG in my 5-speed manual Focus. My commute is mostly interstate driving. I haven't seen a measurable difference between the regular and premium gas, so I generally stick with the 87 octane.

At 30 cents difference, it would be a $3 difference on fill up. I fill up ~10 gallons every time so I'll guestimate for that much. Give it a shot and see if you see results.

Before my accident I was on pace for another 650km tank, Shell Vpower.

I know Ford doesn't recommend premium and rightly so, no one would buy a 20k car that needed premium especially a Ford.

But the Di-VCT can make use of it and I saw enough gains to spend the extra couple of dollars a tank to do so.

Wow! I've never seen 39 but I'm taking my first road trip today so we'll see.

Granted first few days I drove it "hard" but honestly not even to the redline situations more then a few times. It wants me to shift to fifth at 40 MPH and that's a little annoying when a light just turned red a block away. I have now been driving like a grandma but, my results don't seem to be improving. Also, how much would it have cost to put a fricken MPG read out on the S?
I would suggest you spend 1 tank driving easy. Shift about or soon after it recommends. Then if you don't do better than 24 I'd be worried. I get about 26-28 puttsing around suburbia. But I hit about 33 driving across town on the freeway.

I've seen upwards of 42 MPG on a tank, but that was during a cross-state trip on a flat, 55mph highway.

It's very sensitive to driving conditions and driving style, I've found. Gotta minimize braking, hard accelerating, idling or spending a lot of time at low speeds, and traveling up a lot of hills. My daily commute is pretty ideal for all these things, so I don't have to think about it too much. And then I drive my old truck on the weekends, so my Focus isn't getting a lot of "around town" miles that would bring down the average MPG.

I've also wondered if the sedans have better aerodynamics than the hatchbacks. Same goes for my low-end wheels...wonder if they're just better with the wind than the fancy wheels.

I do think the Sedans have less drag coefficient but it's a small diff.

My next fill-up, in August at the current rate, I might try 89 instead of 87... I do mostly city driving (60:40, but over the last month it's been closer to 90:10) and my last fill had shown 28.5MPG as a result. The ~5 mile round trips are what drag it down, especially when I drive in modes other than 'granny mode'. The engine and tranny prefer the higher RPMs early on...

I was at 33-35 until the last three to four fill-ups. Now I'm at 31-32... but I'm hoping the updated software on the transmission will solve things. I'm going to give it a couple of fill-ups to see if it's back to what I was getting.
