It's been pretty hot here recently, so the ac has been on almost all the time. No real hills/moutains in MA, but I do tend to drive a little harder than most. Every now and then, for fun, I shift when the light tells me to and it does make for an improvement in mileage.

EDIT: That's the closest I can get to 500 miles per tank unless I put my 15" LRR tires back on... but they're just so ugly. Also, that's obviously mostly highway driving.
My best tank was 501.5 miles indicated, which when I account for the fact that the odo under reports by 1.4% the tank was actually 508.5 miles. When I filled the tank up it clicked off at 12.0 gallons, but since I'd topped it off by 0.5 gallon the actual tank usage was 12.5 gallon. That works out to about 40.7mpg.

Don't feel alone, I've been getting an average of 24mpg (I'm at my 12th fill up) and everything is hand calculated, and tracked via Fuelly. Sometimes, I get less than 20mpg in the city... to a point, I hardly felt a difference with my old V6 3.3L SUV! But, as soon as you hit the highway, the fuel economy is awesome with this car!

I stopped comparing my car to other Foci on the Fuelly because every car/case is unique... for some, city driving means driving through the city on freeways at 65mph... for me, it's idling, stop & go, stuck in city rush hour traffic.

What kind of driving are you doing, mostly City or Highway? Some people are experiencing better mpg after the odometer hits 1000-1200. If you aren't driving mostly City miles, and aren't a lead foot from hell, I'm thinking you might want to have the dealership take a look at your car.

I only have 2500kms on the car and am currently getting 7.2l/100km, which is a vast improvement over the 8l/100kms I was getting 2 weeks ago. It seems that the more closer to broken in it gets, the tighter the mileage is. Hoping it will settle around the 6.5L (realistically)

I've averaged just about 34 MPG since day 1, primarily with rural and highway driving 50-50 with a little city thrown in. That's with a 5 speed manual.

I have to say though, you have to drive very conservatively to get those MPG's. When it's not necessary don't use all the gears, and shortshift when you can. If you're having ANY kind of fun with the car ... you're definitely going to be under 30. It's very easy to go from 34 MPG to 33 MPG with just a few minutes of 'fun' even when you have a few hundred miles on the tank. These cars like to be driven hard, but they get very thirsty when you do it.

My best was 40.41 on a mostly 230 mile highway trip. 4 MPG OVER the EPA numbers for the manual, and that was when the car was brand new with only a few hundred miles on it.

All numbers are calculated .... the computer is consistently about 1.2 - 1.4 MPG high.

i started to drive like and old woman (1800rpm shift, 60km/hr cruise control, no a/c at all) for the last three days and i'm seeing an improvement to 24.2mpg... it seems that's the only way for me to see real good numbers on my focus :S
