Angry speedo sensor?

I was coming home the a few nights ago, and it was raining very hard. My speedometer started freaking out as I was coming on to base. It kept bouncing up and down, and as it would hit zero, it felt as though the brakes were being hit. The speedometer finally died the next day. I found out that there is five speed sensors on the foci. I figured that the one that went out was the one on the transmission near the diff. BUT, Today as I was heading home for lunch, it was pooring rain again, I decided to abuse my car and drive it through a puddle that came up to the middle of my passenger door. When I came out of the puddle, my speedo began working, bouncing a little, but it was working. I drove around for a few min. and it stopped working again.

Has anyone had or seen or heard of the speedo freaking out. Do you think that it is the sesnor in the transmission.

It is almost 200 dollars to fix this problem, so I want to make sure it isn't anything any worse.

that is what I was thinking. If the water was getting into the sensor, it could be allowing the current to go through causing the sensor to work. The bad thing is,I don't really know where the sensor is. I have a chilton's manual, it shows it, but my sensor doesn't look the same.

as a last resort if you cannot get to the sensor, you could try to cut the wire and bypass that sensor. if there is 5 sensors, the other 4 should work fine without one. im not sure if it would screw anything up more though
