Does more timing make more cylinder pressure? Yes, to a point. The earlier you can fire the plugs the better. Remember the goal for MBT is to get maximum cylinder pressure in the 13-15* ATDC range. That will give the most TQ over the longest and safest rotational range.

If someone's tuning rich it could be they are adding too much timing (fuel is slowing the burn to prevent knock) ... or not enough and the burn is too short. You always have to remember that AFR is a byproduct of combustion. Therefore it can only indicate what could be a problem, never what is exactly the problem (if any).
I do not add a lot of timing if anything low timing , I do not add fuel to over come to much timing , I do safe to both sides , keep in mind once tuned I have no idea what happens with the car , whats changed , how its drove so I tend to go to the safe side , In my opinion a Boosted engine at 13.1 is insane , to gain 20HP from going almost 1 full AF ratio(10.6 to 11.5) is crazy , If you need 20HP more do 1.5 psi more but keep the engine safe

There is NO WAY I would tune ANY boosted car at 13.1 to me thats just insane , 13.1 AF is NA tuning , what do you take your NA tunes to on the Focus ?

Wow yeah, I wasn't aware you guys tuned that lean. Looks like I'll be leaning my car out a bit more, heh...

Tom
I agree its lean but it makes power and stays together. I typically tune customer cars to 11.5-12.0 depending on the situation.
I have actually ran my Acura @ 13.5:1 and 26degrees of timing at 540whp many many times...that's 111 octane of coarse.

To each his own.

I wouldn't lean it out too much, or try to match someone else's AFR's W/O knowing their timing maps.

Realistically I think a better thread would be 'what are safe MBT's and the safe AFR's that accompany them'. A singular post of AFR's is only half the story and can cause more harm than good IMO. Also being the internet is a cruel bitch, you know some kid will bring his newly turbo'd car to some shop and tell them he wants it tuned for such and such, the shop will advise otherwise, an argument will ensue and soon after they'll be on the forum asking all sorts of questions and bitching about such and such. If they'd had more facts/advice prior to and better understood the why's none of this would ever happen, or far less than does now.

Jim, did Fernando ever tune the Comp turbo setup or any setup that Tom also tuned?

Oh, don't worry, won't go overboard. I'm running WMI, though...so WMI + DI = lots of safety. My timing is not super aggressive, either.

Jim, just give it a rest and let's all have a friendly discussion about tuning
