Angry burnt out Ignition coil

Hi,

I own a 2002 focus lx. I was driving home from work the other day and my car started to miss fire making the ride a bit jerky and uncomfortable. Not to mention the lack of power!!! I taught this would have been due to dirty fuel or a faulty fuel pump (as I have heard about the recalls). I brought it in to my local dealer and they diagnosed the problem to be a burnt out Ignition coil. They must have been right because I got it replaces along with a set of new spark plugs and all is running sweet now. 200 it cost me. I was ten days out of warranty

What really pissed me of is the fact there is only 20,000 miles on the car. What the hell is going on I taught this car was meant to be reliable!!
What would have made this happen to the Ignition coil?
And is there anyone else who had a similar problem?

Sounds kike you guys have some pretty short warranties as well. Ours are 3 years or 36, 000 miles (whichever comes first) bumper to bumper and if you bought a 2003 or newer you get a 5 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Your problem, would have been covered under either one. Mazda has had some problems with some of their ignition modules (Miatas and Protege). True coils aren't to common any more on newer cars. There's a chance European cars use more Mazda parts. (Ford owns a controlling interest in Mazda)

Does anyone know the procedure to test the coil pack. I am suspicious that mine may be on the way out but I have not been able to find out how to test it using a didital multi meter.

Any suggestions, the coil has three pins at the connector...

Regards!

Known problem anything from 30kmiles & up. Whenever a zetec starts to do any kind of misfire / hesitation . Try coil first (around 55 euros) I have spent 3 so far on my 00 -1,6 done 135kmiles so far...

If that is a problem, going to a higher quality coil should solve the problem.
