Question Got a strange problem stifling my build.

So the mechanic was trying to finish up my engine build and he finally got everything assembled and the cam springs are compressing as they should and now we see that the stage 3 Comp Cams didn't come with dowel pins to keep the adjustable cam gears synced to the cams. Apparently Comp Cams doesn't send out dowels with there cams. And the hole for the dowel is actually smaller that the dowel that was on my old ford cams. This also means that the dowel holes are smaller in the cam end than the dowel holes in the cam gears. So my mechanic has been trying to speak with support at Comp and they've been no help. They've offered stuff but then don't follow through, like sending dowels that they forgot to send out originally.

Any ideas on how to try and resolve the dowel hole size difference between the cam and the gear. Anyone ever threaded the dowel hole and put a super strong bolt in there? And since the gear has 2 possible dowel holes in them, should we/he try adding a second pin hole for an addition dowel?

Hes kind of stuck until we can resolve this.

Awaiting the saged and awesome advice from my fellow forumites....

If you were going to dowel them, I'd just drill the cam hole larger to match the cam gear.

But like Tom said, really is no need to do so. Mine aren't doweled and I've never had one slip. Just have to make sure to get the bolts good-n-torqued and you'll be fine.

Thanks Guys, The cams that were in the head were doweled and my mechanic had never worked on a zetec at this level so he has no idea about if that was normal or not. He's an old race car driver and mechanic so he knew about most race cams having dowels.

But if Tom says it ain't so then I gotta believe, RIGHT? ;-)

This is why I love this forum!!!!!!

Just spoke to Steve (the Mechanic) and he's warranting the engine so he's gonna add one dowel to the cam end because he will feel better about it in the long run. Im about ready to start a build thread for this because I have tons of upgrades to be done once I get DP back.

Thanks again Tom, Sailor, and my lil pal Satan (IminHell) for your replies!

Oddness.

Cams are for a Zetec, right?

SVT ones might not be adjustable enough (intake) if doweled in place, the adjustable gears could run out of range from what I've seen here of the adj. needed to run those without the automatic adjuster.

Yeah I'm not sure what cams were in the head but they did have dowels because my mechanic extracted them. He's still trying to find a shop to drill the dowel holes larger so the dowels fit the new cams. He's old school so he won't put it together without the dowels. I'm OK with that as it should just mean my cams will be more "sync'ed" to the gears in the long run.

Anywho, I'm just gald Im only a short way from doing my build to my desired outcome!

I'm just trying to double check if the NEW ones are for a zetec.

SVT cams need a major adjustment of the intake side to work when used with adjustable gears instead of the stock variable adjuster.

You should be fine as long as the new ones aren't SVT cams.

Nope they are Comp Stage 3 Zetec Cams.

I was having issues with Comps delivery to C-F-M so I got them from a forum member selling them and the Cr0wer springs I was wanting. Actually save a bit of money at the same time IIRC.

Thanks for looking out for my 0ld arse sailor! As always YOU RAWK!!!!!!! [f0urthumbs]

Yup you don't need those dowels. Since I have mix matched cams on my focus one had a dowel and the other didn't. I ended up removing the dowel from the other one since I wanted both cam gear oriented the same direction when at TDC and with the dowel it was pointing a crazy direction compared to the other one. It's been yearssss since then with no problems.

Rusty if I was me I would tell the guy to hurry up and put it back together, you've been waiting a very long time now.
