Advance Auto Parts has a house branded Mercon V. I've used in in my F150 which requires fluid/filter change every 30K and have made it to over 183K, so it must work.

Another vote to use what they say. It's way cheaper than servicing your power steering system. I also recommend getting a turkey baster and periodically suck some of the fluid out of the pump as it tends to get darker and replace it with fresh Mercon ATF.

I too have been wondering this question, as the manual specifically says to use mercon v in the transmission, but vaguely says to use mercon ATF in the power steering. Considering there are a bazillion mercon atfs, it's be nice for them to clearly state mercon v as well.

The service manual calls for regular Mercon in the power steering system, not mercon-V.
There are two basic varieties of Mercon fluids out there, there is: -regular, multi-purpose, Dex-3/mercon -and there is mercon-V. |

So what would "regular" mercon be labeled as at the store? I can only find Mercon V, Dex/Merc, or "Multi-Vehicle ATF" that matches Dexron III.

Thought that the numbering is just the "version". Most systems if it calls for a previous Mercon the V (5) will work. Its backwards comparable. I think the Mercon V is the only type you can get now days anyway.
Is their any thoughts on running something like Royal Purple MAX ATF or similar full synthetic "performance" ATF fluid in the rack?
