The army is a bit slow
Last yr my friend re-enlisted in the Army, part of his re-enlistment invovled a $15,000 bonus check.
Well the Army messed up and actually sent him $150,000. He noticed this mistake, smiled and figured the Army would be coming back for the $135,000. So he found a CD invested the $150,000 and it took the Army 12 months to notice they over paid him by $135,000 his YTD Pay was right around $200,000 that's quite alot for an E-6 :) A few weeks ago his Commander called him in and questioned about him about it, he said indeed the Army had over paid him by $135,000 when his commander asked why he didn't tell anyone he went "If the Army gave you $135,000 would you tell them?" commander smiled asked if he still had the money he of course was smart and knew he'd eventually have to pay it back. So he said yes, and send the $135,000 back. Smart guy :) Had he spent it'd be screwed ATM. |

I actually heard of a similar situation. Someone I knew ETS'd last year. On his last installment of his initial enlistment bonus, they paid him $22,000 instead of $2,200. He did the same thing and put the money into a savings account waiting for them to call him out. He ETS'd 6 months later and they still hadn't said anything. He later found out that since he's out of the Army and has signed his discharged papers which had stated from the Army that he owed them nothing, they couldn't call him out. He spent half the money as down payment on a new car for his wife this past summer and donated the rest to charity (forget which one). Taxes have come and past and they haven't mentioned anything to him. Lucky b@$terd! lol

Talked to my buddy in finance he says this mistake happens from time to time I'm kinda shocked you'd think they'd catch a $19,000 mistake or a $135,000 mistake...But they don't...He said when he first started he saw a case where the Army had hired a local country, they had agreed on $150,000 for some work, they sent in $300,000 instead (I guess they hit enter twice)
O well shit happens, I once had a older gentleman come into my office to buy a Focus (price of $18,000 for the model he picked) hit transit (he was paying cash) He calls me up two days later and goes "um, did I buy one or two cars" I respond "if you want we can make it 2..." he goes "um, no thanks I think you overcharged me" i went "by how much?" he goes "$18,000" I go "opps" check the system guy has a $18,000 over payment. We of course returned that portion back ASAP. Although he said the system does have it's limits anything over a million requires approval by a 2nd party, said he had a case where a Pvt wasn't getting any money...They checked the system it's because his pay was set at 1.4 million monthly and the system wasn't processing the payment... |

Yup, o the private never got the money. The system wasn't letting it go through which is why he wasn't getting paid.

Army makes these kind of mistakes all the time. Last month I was paid 3900 extra and they are taking it back from me $18 a month :) I think of it like an interest free loan.
