Ok turbo gurus a few questions...

1st question is a trouble shooting problem that I cant seem to track down. My car has done this for a long time has no codes (well it has codes but I have changed the items the codes say are bad with no change in character or code).

What my car is doing is very odd, im beginning to wonder if it is a tuning issue. This problem has been going on for a long time I have been trying to track it down and cant seem to.

I have a 2004 zx3 fully built putting down near 500whp and same wtq. I daily my car and use it for what its built for.

What my car is doing is as im cruising it seems to be around 1700-2200rmp just cruising now. my wide band will be reading 14s-15s and then randomly with no rythm or notice hit 17s for a flash of a split of a second and the car will studder. The car doesnt do it when accelerating or decelerating. under boost it runs perfect 99% of the time once in a blue moon itll studder just the same. The wide band hits this number so fast that you almost dont see it and then goes back to 14s and 15s.

It does this pretty regularly and seems every 20-30 secs or soo on bad days some times not for 10 mins or longer. And the only consistent thing seems to be the rpms.

Things I have changed/checked: fuel pump, spark plugs, maf, coil pack, O2 sensor, cam sensor, crank sensor, spark plug wires. Nothing has made any kind of change.

the codes it reads is cam sensor (which ive checked wiring, plug and sensor several times).

any ideas I havent thought of?

Ok second question. my turbo seals are going out again and im wondering I have another turbo I was going to use for my drift car im building sitting in my spare room. Its the exact same turbo except it has a billet compressor wheel vs the standard wheel. (suppose to be lighter so it spools a bit faster). can I put that turbo on my focus without having it re-tuned?

Also what seals are you guys using on your journal bearing turbos I seem to be replacing seals a lot and I dont understand why. Im not maxing out the turbo supposedly im right in the middle of this turbos efficiency range. How often are you guys changing seals?

nope this is the only turbo ive ever put on this car. im not looking to retune and i know changing the turbo to a completely different turbo will require a retune.

Little tweaking of tune yes. I switched from pte to Garett 2871 and did three tunes and was fully tuned again. How's your trq so close to the hp. Have you checked your fpr. It sounds like for a split second you get fuel cut off. My gage sometimes for like a millisecond while cruising goes into 17. But drives normal n fine

and im not sure how its so close. just the combination of things i guess. i put down 478whp and 482wtq.

I had a similar issue with my car. But it turned out to be so stupid I couldn't believe it. Are you still running the AC ? Mine would do that little blip like yours when the AC compressor would cycle on and off. I swapped it out for another compressor and it went away. The original one just would engage very hard, and suck a lot of HP out of the motor under normal driving , under boost didn't even know the AC was on....

I dont have a log of this.
and it doesnt matter if ac is on or off. every now and then it doesnt do it. but i would say 85% percent of the time it does it.

My suggestion. Log it and e mail tom. He looks at them and gives advice for free. If it's tune related and isn't your tuner obviously that wouldn't be free.
