In autocross there are two main factors to focus on (no pun intended). The first is honing driving skills. Participate in as many driving schools as your sanctioning body (SCCA, NASA, etc.) provides and in as many events as you can. Ask successful drivers to ride with you and offer constructive criticism. Finally before spending bucks on allowable modifications (springs, shocks, light weight wheels, etc) get the best tires you can afford for the class you want to participate in. Tires make a huge difference in the learning curve.

do not mod your car first. learn the limits then mod. you should be modding to "fine tune" your car. just because you add a turbo and coilovers won't make you the stig.
go to the events and learn everything you can about autocross & your car. then go from there. oh yeah, you should probably have posted this in the auotX section.

As said above , learn the limits of the car first, no mods. For tire choice , I'd say a decent summer performance tire. No r-comps or sticky extreme performance tires for learning. They loose traction with less warning and when they do make noise control is already gone.
