HOW TO: 08+ Rear Brake Swap

First of all, I would like to thank my best bud Carl (BeatSVT) for helping me out with this project. I would also like to thank him for taking all the pics along the way. If you looking into doing this swap definitely give yourself a whole day to do it.

I bought my kit from Capaldi Racing. It was ~$450 shipped. The kit comes with everything you need including new hardware (axle nuts, etc).



For this installation I followed the instructions from the following link:

These directions have plenty of pics to help along the way. However, for us 08+ guys there are a few differences.

First, thing; jack up your ride.


Pull the wheels and dig in.


Remove the rear drum by taking off the axle nut. (I recommend using a breaker bar or impact gun). Remove the shoes and springs. Remove the brake line from the back of the backing plate. Take the backing plate off by removing the 4 spindle nuts from behind the suspension.





From the above photo once the drum setup is removed, the bolts holes for the spindle bolts are exposed. These bolts are LARGER as compared to the older Foci.





The new spindle holes are smaller. The bolt next to the spindle is the larger bolt that was used to hold the drum backing plate and stock spindle on. Since the new spindle uses smaller bolts, the holes in the suspension cradle are too large.

Carl and I went to my Dad's work to have the spindles drilled and tapped to work on the larger stock bolts. The stock bolts are 12x1.5. So you will need to drill and tap accordingly. Don't forget to drill the holes for the dust shields also.



Next, we installed the new spindle and dust shield.



Once we finished that we tackled the e-brake cable. Remove the heat shielding that sits above the exhaust. This exposes the cable junction. Disconnect the cable at this point.

If you look at the left end of the new cable, you can see brackets. The brackets aren't on the stock e-brake cable. However, it does work out nicely.
Remove the rear splash guards from each side.



Once the splash guard is off, the brackets can be installed using the holes that were used for the splash guard. (The splash guard can be used, it just needs to be modified).



Run the e-brake cable and connect it to the front cable under the car. At the end of the new cable, the plastic connectors are smaller. (I had to modify them to work on the car's e-brake cable mount).

Once the e-brake is connected. Install the caliper brackets, caliper, pads, connect the e-brake to the caliper, and attach the brake lines to the caliper first.



Run the brake line and disconnect the stock line here:


There is a little bracket that comes with the kit. This holds the brake line in place:


Once that is installed you can connect the line and start bleeding the system.



From this pic the line looks a little short. However, with the car on the ground and with the suspension having a load on it, there is plenty of slack in the line.

ALL DONE!!





There is a HUGE difference in braking. It is definitely worth the time to do this swap!
