Full exhaust heat shield, removal safe?

ok so here is my problem. my heat shield rattles real bad underneath my car, and it only does it at low speeds, or at idle. so ive added some screws to secure it to the car so it wont move while i drive, and it works for a while but since it has several rust spot it will rattle in another spot. so my question is , can i remove the whole heatshield from underneath the car and be safe? or is it a bad idea. and if i do remove it what can i use to replace it. i really dont know how much heat that shield can actually repel seeing how its just a really thin sheet of metal. any help i greatly appreciated.

I removed everything from the rack and pinion to the rear bumper. That was 2 years ago and it's been fine. The only part with any insulation is near the firewall. I got sick of chasing the the rattles. Every time I fixed one, a different one would start.

All that's left for a heat shield on mine is the firewall and I have my header wrapped. No problems.

Any suggestions on getting that thing off, mine to is rusted but it appears that just taking the 4 bolts from the manifold won't completely loosen it. It goes down tight in front of the radiator...

Are you talking about the header shield ? On my stock Zetec it just took alot of twisting, turning, and bending to get it off.

you can remove it, but in the more northern states, its harder on materials w/ temperature changes, if there is snow and its 15 below, then its harder on it than summer.

I've always been told that its never a good idea to remove the heat shield. But some people have done it without problems, so I don't know.
