just changed at 92k and belt showed no wear at all, however the tensioner and idler had little juice left in them.

I got up to 132K and I felt dumb and scared. Got it fixed in time though.

I'm at 115,2XX miles right now and have to replace my IAC valve today so I'll check the belt out while I'm there; if it looks like it needs to be done I'll probably have to see if they can do it next week.

I bought mine used with just under 90k miles on it, so I'm not sure if it has been changed before or not.

New SVTF owner here and have a few questions about having my timing belt changed. the car has 115,000 miles and has likely never had it done by the service records, habits of previous owner. Anyway, after reading through the excellent How-To and watching it done on YouTube I've decided it's beyond my mechanical capabilities. Maybe not, but I don't want to take a chance. That means a Mechanic and here is where I have questions.

I have quotes from several shops. Some are national chains like CarX, some are larger shop local mechanics. They all have similar quotes and the Ford dealer is $200 more.

Question: What are your opinions of having this done at a dealer vs chain vs local?

Question: Do I need to tell them anything specific to the SVT to keep them from screwing anything up?

Any other advice on things I'm not thinking about here would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

i am in the same predicament here as trotskyite is. any one with advice would help.

i got a quote from ford saying 349.60 just in labor. ive talked to another shop locally that will do it all for 593.18 plus tax and he said that includes parts. he said he buys it as a kit that'll replace all the pulleys with new ones as well.

do these numbers sound right?

That beats me, the quotes for mine were $916 at the Ford Dealer and about $700 everywhere else.

The kit comes with a new tensioner pulley, which needs to be changed when you replace the belt. The tensioner often fails before the belt does.

I'll vouch for the tensioner failing, and the belt will follow, drive directly to a shop once you here a squeal coming from your engine area. Do not wait a day or another 20 miles. Its not worth the risk. I was 5 miles away from spending $3000 to fish out pieces of broken valves.

I'm at 128k right now. I'm almost sure the belt is original (got the car with like 70k on it). I plan to do it before the car gets back into a driving state...
